Finale 2014 is here -- $140 upgrade

Post by mhschmieder »

Just received an email; most of you will probably as well tonight.

I haven't the time to hunt down my receipts but could swear I spent far less than that on my cross-grade, so $140 seems steep for the upgrade.

Still, if it keeps the developer in business...

I would provide the link from my email, except it points to their info sheet on Finale 2012. :-)

Their main page has a "coming soon" icon for the 2014 edition, but nothing more.

Guess they wanted to get the upgrade money ASAP via email alerts and focus on the website later. :-)

The funny thing about that though, is that even the "upgrade" link in the email points to the Finale 2012 upgrade site.

Won't let me upgrade but the last two upgrades were $120 and the previous few were $118. I suspect a lot of extra work (man hours) went into the this one as they skipped over F2013.

Probably will allow the upgrade in the morning but at least it's here!

My big thing being a noob to Notation Software is maybe a possibility that the delay on playback is resolved? I will not complain at all about the price, I got in for $99 freaking dollars in an out of the blue sale while I was trying the free version!

Not 64 bit yet. Not good. It'll run booted in a 64 machine but that kind of sucks, IMO.

Really? I think we've reached a point where anyone coming out with a new release that isn't 64 bit is just shooting themselves in the foot. Just sayin'.

The little videos didn't show much in the way of improvements for the dough. But maybe they were just trying to keep it simple.

Not a huge Finale user, but I like to have it on my machine just in case and for the little bit of notation that I do. Being that I just upgraded everything (computer, software, etc.) and I'm 32 bit free . . . is there any functional way (outside of memory usage) that not being 64 bit is a hinderance?

If you're just doing little bits of scoring here and there, it's not a big deal at all. There are two major times when it is a big deal:

1 - Working on large orchestral scores;

2 - Needing 64 bit VIs.

At present, Finale will not run if Vienna Instruments 64 bit AU is present in the system folder (Library/Audio/Plugins/Components) which also means Finale cannot access that VI.

Also if you have multiple documents open and they are somewhat large, 64 bit would also allow better use of RAM (i.e.- more than 4GB at once). I'm not sure if the OS will still multi-thread on a 32 bit app, but someone above my pay grade might be able to answer that.

Let's see... I can upgrade from Finale 2011 for 139.95 or do a competitive upgrade from one of my many Encore licenses for $139. Seriously. It really says that.

Not 64bit? No speed increase? Some minor enhancements. Oh ... Banjo has been added to Garritan Instruments. Oh man! Uh... right...

I will get around to it. Not today. I spent this month's software budget on other tools.

There are some very serious improvements for some of us. For example, combining rests in measures with layers that have identical rhythms. No small consideration! That can take more time than you might imagine in earlier version.

I saw that and I quite agree. Resolving redundant accidentals in multiple layers and showing staff names in scroll view - about friggin' time, right? Those little things can add up in a big project and, when you know that an upgrade fixes those issues...

Yep, gotta do this one. I will even spend the extra 95¢ and upgrade my current license. Just not today. Maybe they offer another crossgrade special and I'll get lucky.
