How to play aac file without decoding as PCM using anyplayer

Post by subbireddy »

Hi All,

I am trying to play .aac file over HDMI and my device is capable of detecting AAC stream. But when i am trying to play using MPC-BE and MPC-HC players my code is detecting it as PCM instead of AAC, that's means the player is decoding AAC to PCM i think so.

Is there any other player or do i need to change some settings in MPC-HC/BE player to play as AAC instead of PCM?

Guys please help me on this

Could you please clarify what you mean by "MPC-HC/BE players"?

I'm on Windows also, but do not recognize that one.

Thanks for your reply terry.

I have installed MPC-HC(Media Player Classic Home Cinema) and Media Player Classic - Black Edition (MPC-BE) players on windows.
https://mpc-hc.org/

Those are players like audacity. From those players we can play all types of audio formats.

I am able to play AAC file using those players but i don't want to decode that player as PCM data. Do you have any idea regarding this?

Ah, I understand now. You want to send the data raw and not uncompressed out your HDMI.

I have not used Media Player Classic in years (the current Windows 10 players cover all the bases, and I use Foobar2000 and VLC extensively these days). Not sure at all there is a "Raw" setting (sometimes called "bitstream"), as typically a media players "job" is to uncompress the data using the right CODEC and send it out to the mixing system as PCM. So, a Raw (or "Bitstream") setting would likely be what to look for.

I'll look at Foobar2000 and VLC later tonight to see if they have such output capabilities, but keep us posted if MPC has it somewhere.

Hi Terry,

Even I have followed same steps provided by your link but still getting PCM data only.

If I found any solution regarding this i will post here.

Apart from those players let me know if any other player can do AAC stream with out decoding as PCM.

Hmmmm - I wonder if Windows itself is interfering here? Bitstream is Bitstream, and is not PCM, so I do not understand how the settings could be sending PCM.

Check the HDMI device in the Windows Audio control panel to see if perhaps an effect is turned on or something.

Terry,

In Bit Stream I Didn't see an option for AAC. Even though I enabled other Bit streams like DTS,AC3 etc. Still it's detecting as PCM only.

Even I tried by modifying different settings in audio control panel like by configuring Audio channels to 5.1 or 7.1 still it's detecting as PCM.

I have tried one more player called kodi, in that it has an option like audio pass through but i didn't AAC as pass through means my code is always detecting it as PCM only.

Well, heck! Why would AAC break the bitstream option I wonder?

I'm stumped and fresh out of ideas for the moment, but I'll keep my eyes open and do some research in parallel to yours. Keep us posted with what you discover - I'm watching this thread.

I posted my query in MPC-HC website itself. one of guy is telling like AAC bit stream is not possible using MPC-HC player.

The prospects for success appear bleak, I am sorry to say. Without a player that supports streaming raw AAC, the usefulness of the receiving board is questionable - unless you build a custom player. What is the use of a device being capable of detecting AAC stream if there is no player that will send it such a stream?

I wonder if VLC will do it?

Terry,

Shark codec has an option AAC bit stream. Do you know how to use shark codec and stream using shark codec?

No, that is the first time I've heard of it.

The closest I've come to wanting to stream AAC is to stream AC3 for surround! (Well, it has an "A" and a "C" in it!)

I'll take a look at Shark.

Oh, now I recognize that name, "Shark" - it is a CODEC pack, very popular.

I do not see anywhere where it says it can cause your media player to stream raw AAC. I do know it will DECOMPRESS AAC (and send is as PCM, which is not what you want). CODEC stands for Compress/Decompress in case you didn't know that salient point.

I do not think that is the direction you want to be going.

AAC is a compression format, and typically is decompressed into PCM before being useful, as you've discovered. If you do not decompress it at the computer, you would require a device that could decompress it at its end. Some smart TV's may have some built-in AAC decompression, so they can read AAC files directly from a thumb-drive, but I'd be curious to see whether they are set up to decode anything coming over the HDMI line.

Hi Terry,

My PC is not detected AAC encoded format when connecting HDMI port it has support for DTS,DTS-HD etc. I didn't see AAC encoded format support for HSR41. Please see the attached image.
