828x Windows Thunderbolt problem

Post by LeMotu »

I Just bought the 828x yesterday. Updated firmware. Installed most recent driver.

When I plug in via Thunderbolt, windows instantly crashes. A blue screen that says something like "your pc ran into a problem..." appears. USB works, though shakey. I bought this for the thunderbolt

Is anybody using Windows Thunderbolt with the 828X successfully?

It may be that no one who regularly reads these threads is using the 828x via Thunderbolt in Windows.

You want to register your unit at MOTU.com and post a Tech Link in Support.

Please update this thread and tell us what you find out. It will help others.

Thanks Mike. I called support. I didn't mention in my original post that I'm running windows via bootcamp with my macbook. They explained that they don't offer support for such. I imagine it has something to do with that- unfortunate

also, it DOES work via thunderbolt on the mac side, however I need it to function on the windows side as well

You may have to explore Parallels or one of the other Windows bridges for Mac.

Can you see the TB port in Bootcamp i. e. does anything show up?

Excuse my ignorance here as I've never worked in Windows much at all.

If the Windows OS doesn't support TB how can it possibly be expected to work?

There are Windows PCs that support Thunderbolt. Like the 2011-on Macs, they must have the Intel chip set on the motherboard that allows this to happen.

I've never run Bootcamp, Parallels or any other Windows bridge on a Mac—not interested, frankly. I have a WinXP machine for those extremely rare occasions.

Back to the OP. Probably best to look for some user boards where they discuss running TB in Windows on a Mac to find out how (if?) it's being done. If someone's doing it in Bootcamp, knowing how should help find the solution. Parallels advertises that all Win functions are possible and it's not expensive—is there a user group?

Thunderbolt does work on Windows boot camp- I'm currently using a thunderbolt LaCie rugged SSD.

I think parallels would work, but has drawbacks. For what I'm doing, boot camp is the way to go. It functions exactly as a normal PC would (minus this problem).

Gonna keep hunting. Cheers

Dang...

It must be that the 828x drivers cannot make the bridge. Although this usually means it can be done, it's been 13 years since I did any Windows support—I got out as XP was coming in.

Do the Win drivers have to find TB or do you have to call the Mac drivers in the layer below? I just don't know. One or the other should be possible.
