Windows 10. Switch from line to mic

Post by waz »

How do I switch from line input to mic input on channel 1/2 of a Motu Ultralite Mk3? Is this doable from the motu software?

Aren't these inputs "Mic/Instrument", rather than "Mic/Line"? Which it is depends on what you plug into it. Looks like inputs 3 to 8 are line level.

There is no "switch" other than to use 1/4" balanced or unbalanced plugs (NEVER XLR!) for the line inputs. Set the trims at zero and turn down the sliders to half or so (-12 db) and you'll be fine. I'm assuming you want to use those inputs with a synth or tape input or something?

I have a lapel mic with an 1/8" plug which I convert to 1/4" I can't seem to get enough gain.

Could the battery be nearly dead? The adapter would not cause a loss in gain unless it was defective. For mic input you would need to push up the trim value in Cuemix. If that is not enough to compensate, then you might need to buy a transformer-style high-impedance to low-impedance adapter, which will make a stack of two adapters in your case (the 1/8" to 1/4" into the transformer 1/4" to XLR adapter).

The mic is a straight up dynamic microphone with no pack. I was hoping to use the gain controls from the MOTU to eliminate the need for the battery pack.

I have a couple old hi-impedance tape recorder mics lying around here somewhere - I'll do some tests with them and see if I can get enough gain out of that "instrument" input from those trims. I'm surprised to hear you cannot.
