MOTU 828mkII quit working after overnight Windows 10 Update.

Post by lbolen »

Suddenly my MOTU 828mkII has stopped working as my default audio device for Windows 10 after Win10 updated itself overnight.

Current 828mkII firmware 1.0
Current 828mkII boot 1.0

Windows version: Windows 10 Home 64-bit,
Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3124262)
Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3124263)
Processor: AMD A10-5700 APU 3.4 GHz with 8 GB RAM

I have unistalled MOTU Audio, reinstalled latest driver, MAI_Win_66814.zip, and still receive playback error "failed to play test tone." and iTunes no longer plays using MOTU Main Out 1 - 2 as default audio device.

Sidenote, SONAR X3 still uses the MOTU ASIO as audio and still functions perfectly, and the MOTU software Audio Console and CueMix FX still function and control the 828mkII just fine.

Any suggestions?

Les

PS, I tried updating the firmware but the software insists that I plug the unit in to USB...I'm fairly certain there is not USB port on this unit.

You can't update the firmware on this unit so the lack of USB isn't a problem.

Try resetting factory defaults

It's Windows 10. Lots of problems including FireWire. Google might be your best friend.

Place a Tech Link with MOTU support.

Search this board to see if there's a thread that may have some good suggestions.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your response. I do have an open TechLink with MOTU and am waiting for further response. I did notice a post about firewire and firmware in regards to version 1.01 or something that it was only available if you bought it with that version.

Ya, Win10...it had been working fine until late one night when it just decided to update Windows overnight and then...nada. Oh well, I suppose I can use the motherboard's audio chip, however there's a small 60 Hz hum I notice through the monitors that isn't there with the MOTU...I may have to live with it for now.

Thanks again,
Les

That sucks.

Google Windows 10 and Firewire to see many pages of problems. This page shows the most promise of something that might actually work:

The other solution that seems to work is to purchase a new FW PCIe card that is known to be compatible with Win10. This Vantec gets mentioned as one that works — it has the Texas Instruments FW chip set, always a good sign. You might want to contact pre-sales on the Win10 issue since it is not mentioned on their web site..

OK so this exact same thing just happened to me but with a 896MK3 Firewire. Have been working flawlessly for over a year, using a firewire PCI adapter card. Then an overnight windows 10 update and boom... Did you ever find a solution to this? I would really appreciate anything you learned from your experience

My 1248 which hooks up through USB has done the same thing and I've been trying everything to get it to work again.

So I found a fix for my problem and thought maybe it would help you guys as well.
I had to uninstall my driver for the MOTU and restart the computer and when it started back up it automatically found the driver and reinstalled it and it now works.

So I hope this helps you guys!!!!!

My windows 10 system has been running reasonably well since January, when i upgraded from win 7. Since I got pushed the 1607 (anniversary) update last week I get a failure during boot. Disabling the motu driver in safe mode allows the system to boot.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and that hasn't fixed it. I've removed the PCI 424 card and removed the drivers, reboot, install the drivers.

About to put the card back in...

big Hooray! I'm back in business!

The card was recognized, and I had to re-enable the device in the device manager. I also had to re-select the output device in Sonar X2. But I've got my 2408 Mk3 back!

System :

Windows 10 Home
Version 1607, build 14393.351
Intel i7 960 @ 3.2 GHz, 18 GB RAM (no CPU fan)
MSI X58 MS-7522 m/b with AMI BIOS v8.15
ATI Radeon HD 3450 display (no fan)
MOTU PCI-424 / 2408mk3 fw 1.0 hw 1.2
MOTU Driver 4.0.6.6814

If you see any odd behavior (like glitches or whistle-causing sync losses) after all this driver installing, see this post on what I did to stop it. If all is well, leave well enough alone, perhaps! :)

I was happy. Now I'm less happy. After a good recording session on Tuesday I started the machine today (Saturday) do run a quick mix and I'm back to square one, with System Thread Exception Not Handled errors in MotuAW.sys when I enable the MOTU PCI Audio device in device manager.

I really don't want to remove and reinstall the card and driver for every session. Grrr.
