It was discovered that hitting the mute button didn't mute the audio, but made the audio really loud (hitting the mute button, again, produced normal volume).
After the recording, the interface was power-cycled.
The mute button was tested, and functioned as expected.
Later, during a recording to the computer (R eaper), the mute button was hit and it stopped the audio signal, to the computer.
Hitting the mute button, again, brought the audio signal back (we have a recording with 10 seconds, or so, of silence, in the middle).
Maybe, there is a short or something?
