Using a 828x at 64buffers via USB with 24 io???

Post by txshonk »

I m looking for a USB interface to use for live sound with a windows laptop. I was looking at the 828x. Since it is live Id like the buffers to be set at 64 to minimize latency. I also need 24 in and probably at least 16 out.

Anybody using one of these (or another MOTU box) with similar channel and buffer requirements via USB? If so can you share what box and you PC specs?

Thanks,

Dave

The interface is not the determining factor in whether or not 24 channels will work with a buffer that small. It would surprise me if that worked, however. With most systems, 256 will not be an issue.

Are you recording while playing those tracks? If not, latency isn't an issue at all.

I appreciate the feedback. I know the interface isn't a determining factor itself, but the drivers do very much come into play. I know MOTU has a reputation for drivers that handle low buffer situations well. And I do know that I am asking a lot of USB 2.0.

I borrowed a friend Steinberg UR824 and it wasn't horrendous, but it wasn't usable at 64 buffers of 24 in.

I know Cadillac of hardware for my application is probably an RME box, but that will run me more than twice the cost as a MOTU. So I was hoping someone might tell me they were able to get reliable low buffer results over USB on a Windows machine.

Perhaps it could over Thunderbolt but otherwise, my earlier reply stands.
