Firewire/USB

Need some advice.

At the moment i'm running an 896 into my pc via firewire. Also have an 8pre via optical adat.

My pc is nearing the end of its life and i would prefer to replace it with a laptop for more portable recording. However, the problems with firewire in laptops is pretty well documented. So my two options are

1. Find a supplier of laptops that have onboard TI firewire (i understand ADK do this but unfortunately their supplier in the UK doesn't carry the model that has the necessary firewire chipset. WHY?????)

2. Ditch the current 896 and get a hybrid replacement. Does anyone have any experience of using USB for pro audio? Are there any potential conflicts or issues? If not then i could theoretically use my current, very powerful, Dell laptop.

Any comments or advice would be great.

Hello, welcome.

No it isn't. If nothing is damaged on it, it could last for another 20-30 years for all you know.

It is preferable to stick with the firewire since it doesn't share bandwidth with external mice, keyboards or any other USB peripherals.

If you want a laptop, all you'd need to do is look for one that can accept an add-on card and then throw a firewire card into it.

You could use USB though and get away with it if that's the way you want to go though.
