Farewell sweet 8pre, and Huzzah to MOTU!

Post by kevinwal »

My 10 year old 8pre finally broke and I'm beside myself with grief. It's been an absolute workhorse over the last decade, powered up more often than not, and utterly reliable. Interestingly, it wasn't the electronics that died, it still works well. Rather, the volume knob broke off, it's downfall being that it's a multifunction switch, with both a taper pot and a switch to switch the output the taper pot controls. If you're not careful, and I wasn't, it will snap off.

More as a matter of curiosity I called MOTU support to inquire about getting my beloved 8pre repaired. Travis H. answered after less than a minute on hold and I told him my tale of woe. Travis tells me that for a flat $99.95 USD they'll just replace the whole shebang with a refurbished one. That struck me as being a fabulous deal so I took him up on it, and I'll be shipping ol' Number 8 (my term of endearment for this lovely device) home on Monday.

I haven't heard of any other manufacturer offering such a nice service, but then again, being a loyal MOTUer, I wouldn't, would I? :)

Kudos and a loud Huzzah for Travis and MOTU!

Awesome!

I took a similar route with my 828 I bought used (and cheap!)

$99 later, I had a refurbished unit with a warranty!

Motu is fantastic for offering this service!

Yup.

MOTU seems to be delivering the sort of service long-time fans, such as many of us are, would expect.

Not everything is eligible for this, unfortunately, including the original 828 and 828mkII due to lack of certain parts. For those units that are, the price and turnaround can't be beat.
