Another shifted classic remix by Stubbsonic
Some of you may remember my rhythmically re-contextualized remix of Carol of the Bells from a few years ago. The original music was completely untouched-- but a different time system (6/8) was imposed on it and it was shifted one 8th note earlier...

Not long after making that, I had similar mischief in mind for Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. This simply shifts the music one 8th note (of a triplet) earlier, and involves a relatively simple electronic percussion track to help the listener "make the shift".
After sharing this with some musician friends, I found that not everyone can easily make this shift. It is, in some sense, a new piece of music. However, once you get it, you mightn't even need the drum tracks to hear it this way. Beethoven would either get a big kick out of this, or he may come at me with a shovel. Fortunately, even his de-composing days are over.

Interesting. I'm not sure that either are ready for the clubs. With a little more work, however ... you could make it work.
A friend of mine once told me that he wished he'd lived with Beethoven. That way, if he was out clubbing and heard, oh, the Moonlight or Fifth Symphony etc., he could turn to his date and say, "Hey, my roommate wrote that."

That's interesting. It's how I often hear it. Maybe not quite ready for the clubs but a little faster and some changes in instruments and why not?

Thanks for listening. "Ready for the clubs" is not really the point. If you can hear those rhythms in their new placement, that is the goal. I can't tell from your less-than-enthusiastic response whether you are able to make the shift or not.mikehalloran wrote:Interesting. I'm not sure that either are ready for the clubs. For Carol of the Bells, there is hi-hat in 2 & 4 (if it is 12/8 or swing 4/4) and you can try to keep that time as the melody enters. The first note is on the last 8th of the 12/8.
For Moonlight, there is a cross-stick on 2 & 4 (and a snare on 3). Try to hold that new beat as the piano enters. It keeps in it's original time-sig, but is shifted one 8th note earlier, so the first note is a pick-up. The 2nd note of the old triplet is now the new beat.
When you hear it (it's a bit like eye magic) it's pretty entertaining.

You talking about Moonlight? With both of them, once I "heard it" I wanted to see if I could (via accompaniment) get others to re-orient.bayswater wrote:That's interesting. It's how I often hear it.

For all my visual learners, I grabbed a screen of some notation to help you get your bearings.

I heard it—very easy. Not sure what the point is, however.
There are some interesting possibilities. It would be fun to hear what you come up with if you were to push the envelope. The Beethoven is not under copyright... just saying.

Re: Another shifted classic remix by Stubbsonic
The point/goal for me is simply to help some listeners be able to hear this music (as it is) in the new placement. I pushed the envelope with Carol of the Bells, which was fun. For Moonlight, it's just fascinating for me to listen to that piece in this second way. It's more groovy and rich.
The point was to see if I could (with a suggestive accompaniment track) help another person to hear it that way, too.
You and Bayswater seem to have gotten it quickly. Bayswater said he had already heard Moonlight that way already. That's cool!
I play Zimbabwean-style music (lots of 12/8 grooves) and I know that many of my Zimbabwean-music buddies had already heard Carol of the Bells this way as well.
