TOO MUCH JOHNSON

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

Hi kids,

My scores for the National Film Preservation Foundation's web release of the Orson Wells silent film from 1938 "Too Much Johnson" are out today!

The 34 min. edited version is easier to watch and follow. It is here:

http://www.filmpreservation.org/preserv ... reimagined

The 66 minute version is difficult to follow and includes all takes from the dailies. It is here:

http://www.filmpreservation.org/preserv ... work-print

I thought you might enjoy these.

Best,

Michael

The music is lovely, Michael. Splendid, in fact.

I was struck by the quality of the restoration! The film looks almost like a modern film that is effected to look old. Really impressive.

If I had one criticism, (not that you were asking) it would just be that the piano seemed a bit dark sounding (not enough high end for how I imagine that style). That said, along with the beautifully restored video, it makes it feel less "cartoonish" and more intimate.

Thank you so much for sharing this!!

TOO MUCH JOHNSON

Thanks, man. I try to NOT fall into clichéd expectations of tinny, out of tune music. That's what the public expectation is but clearly not the intention of the original films. I leave it to the other silent guys to provide clichéd accompaniments. I want the films to be represented in as authentic a setting as possible but still try to maintain a contemporary feeling and that means well EQ'ed, fine quality instruments. Besides, I like darker sounding instruments. The longer version sounds tinny to me and stylistically more towards the late 19th century melodrama style. The short version is clearly more jazz oriented and I prefer that style. I have several rejected scores which are right out of the Schubert and Beethovenesque play book. I much prefer these to the selected scores but I don't sign the front of the checks, only the backs. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed them.

Nice job, Mike!

Those are fantastic scores.

So far, I like the score to the longer version a little more. You're right. Stylistically it sounds more towards the 19th century, but it definitely works.

I've had to watch it in segments because the browser keeps stopping, but I'm half way there already.

I forwarded these to some of my friends, my wife, Sylvia and daughter, Marjorie.

Sylvia is interested in your work and likes what she has heard. Maybe I'll get her to that festival in Marin this year.

Marjorie is my daughter who is working on her Master's in composition. It's part of my not so subtle campaign to remind her that people can get ... oh, what's the word I'm looking for? Oh yea, paid for their work.

Indeed.
