Hey, here's a shameless self promo of three short silent films by Georges Méliés that I composed new music for. The idea was to feature an amazing trombonist here in Los Angeles, Alex Iles, who has virtuostic chops. He commissioned me to write a suite for trombone and silent films so I picked three of Méliés films and did different musical treatments with each one.
The first movement is "The Black Imp", with Alex on trombone, myself on clarinets, Valarie King on flute/piccolo, Wayne Bergeron on trumpet, Stefanie Fife on cello, and all the rest is sequenced by me. Here's the link:

The second movement is a surreal magic trick titled "Excelsior" and features Alex on trombone, myself on clarinet, Liz Finch on accordion, Tom Lockett on acoustic bass and Ray Brinker on snare drum with brushes:

The third movement is called "Cook in Trouble" and it features the Black Imp character again. I did this for electric guitar quartet and trombone and percussion, featuring Ken Rosser on all the guitars myself on sampled perc and of course the amazing Alex Iles again:

This was all done in DP 7.24. I'm hoping to do a fourth movement at some point but who knows when I'll do that, so I figured I'd share these 3 movements with all my MOTUnation buds!
Enjoy!

LOVE the Black Imp, Frank! You hit the mark perfectly!!! Bravo.
The other two are also well done. Because of my close proximity to presenting these films for archives I am something of a purist in terms of the musical styles and the more contemporary jazz style doesn't work as well for me. But that's just me.
The music itself is excellent as always with you. Fine work! Do more!!!!

Hi Mike! Yeah, I know it's very unorthodox stylistically what I did on these but that was part of the fun for Alex and I- trying to make something from 100 years ago work with newer music styles and ideas. It was a fun excursion into the land of weird!

Frank, I am often in the minority in terms of what I think "works" for these films. Frankly (no pun intended) anything goes! Great stuff, really!
