MSI.dat file will not copy to MAC HD

Has anyone else had this problem and if so would they please let me know of a fix. I have an Intel Duo Core iMAC running 10.4.11 OSX and I can't even get the friggin MSI.dat file to copy to any location on my hard drive. Everytime it gets to about 1.5 GB - 2.5 GB into copying the entire MAC goes blank and turns off. What is going on?
