Confused working with QS8

Post by SixStringGeek »

I'm trying to make some new patches for my QS8 and I'm finding working with it and Unisyn confusing. I find that, whatever patch I choose as a starting point, I say copy to program and edit. This works, I get the editor and can make changes - however while listening to the changes, I continue to hear the original sound as well as the edited sound being played at the same time. I'm quite confused as to how to just edit a patch here.

The QS8's miserable minimal UI and lame documentation isn't helping me any.

What's the trick to getting the QS8 into an edit mode where I'm only hearing the one edited patch?

Whoa. That's weird. Are you by any chance in Mix Mode (on the QS)? Otherwise I can't imagine being able to hear two sounds at once from the QS. You'll want to be in Program Mode instead.

I think I'm in program mode. I like the sound and feel of the QS8 a lot, but the designers of the 7 button ten thousand mode interface with 6 character display - they can burn in hell.

I guess I need to get out the manual and do some more careful reading. Its hard to get into the creative flow these days when there's always more manuals to re-read. I think airline pilots do less studying to stay current.

OK, here's what I'm doing and I'm still hearing two sounds - I select in unisyn, 'copy to destination and edit' where destination is the program buffer. Then changing parameters in the program buffer changes the sound there, but I'm still also hearing the original selected patch.

MIDI keyboard setting - OUT-1. Mode is program. Both MIDI out and MIDI in cables connected....

I must be doing something wrong - do others not set the program buffer as their destination when working on a patch?

Hey, SixString,
I've brought up Unisyn (it's been a while) and I'm messing with it. I'll write back soon with what's happening here. So far I haven't been able to duplicate your problem, but I'll keep checking.

Stay tuned... (Gotta get the kids to bed and pack for a gig tomorrow AM.)

I'm back...

I've set my QS to KBD MODE: Out 01 (like yours).

When using my QS7 w/ Unisyn 2.1.1, I bring up the Devices Window and open up the QS section so I can see all the Banks, Mix Channel patches and the Program Mode Patch. If I double click on any of the patches (whether under the Mix heading or the Program heading) the edit window for that patch comes up and I can hear that sound (and my QS switches to the appropriate mode automatically).

If I start tweaking the edit window, I hear the changes as they should be (no original sound coming through behind it). I'm not consiously sending or copying the patch to an edit buffer in the QS. I DO think that's what's happening, but I'm not selecting an option in a menu to do that. I'm just double clicking and going for it.

If I'm in a Bank Edit window and I click the little triangle next to a patch, I see the option to "Send to Target and Edit". So if I select a particular channel in Mix Mode, then send a patch from the bank window to "Target", the patch is sent to that channel in my QS and I can edit it. If I selected the patch field under Program Mode as target, then it goes there and my QS jumps to Program Mode. I can also just drag patches from the bank edit window to the desired channels in the Devices window and it's done fo rme. I'm not sure where you found the option to send to the buffer specifically, although I thought that's where these were all going anyway.

Under the Play Menu, you might experiment with the different "Echo" settings. Mine is set to "Echo On Play Channel" and "Auto play Channel Selection".

Geez, I dunno if I'm helping. I'm just trying to spell out what I'm doing since it seems to be working on my system. Let us know if any of this lit any new light bulbs over your head. Mine are kinda sputtering...

I'm going to try this procedure this weekend. The QS started acting wonky and I re-initialized it - might be part of the problem. It had stopped sending mod wheel and I was hearing two timbres all the time, regardless of mode. Maybe a glitch?

Anyhow, I'm going to try doing what you said and see if I can make some tasty tones.

Thanks for all your help.

Great. Yeah, sounds like it might indeed be a hardware issue. Good luck.

BTW, your Jambalaya app looks very cool...
