Unexpected error: (-1401)
Complete error screen text:
An error occurred while writing to the disk. The file /Volumes/x/file name.dpdoc was not saved.
OS error:
Unexpected error (-1401)
Try to save your file on another disk or folder, or with a different name.
Has anybody seen this?
I can Save As... a different file name into this same folder, but the next time I try to Save, I get the same error message. I also get the error if I try to Save As the original file name (over-writing the previous saved version).
If I load the same project from a different drive, I don't get the error. This may be a permissions issue. The drive in question is a shared drive over a 10 GbE NAS I just installed. I can write to it (Save files) from other apps. And I can save some DP projects, but not others.
Any ideas?

You've already identified the problem.

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
Mike, I have permissions on the entire NAS set to Everybody can Read and Write. I've invoked Get Info on the master folder that holds all my DP projects and files, and used the "Apply (read and write privileges) to enclosed items," but the issue persists.I can save some DP projects, but not others.
As Admin, I should have write access to most documents anyway. One cannot set a shared disk to "Ignore ownership" in the Finder, but as I wrote earlier, I have set all permissions to "Everybody" in the NAS admin app.
So, do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
What is the NAS and what protocol (AFP, SMB) are you using to access it?

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
NAS: QNAP-TVS872XT
protocol: SMB/CIFS - I have other options: NFS, FTP, and AFP
I have two ways to connect: Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) or 10 GbE. The issue persists no matter which I choose.
I just experimented with changing my protocol to FTP, AFP, and NFS, and got the same errors on save on both.
When I Get Info on the affected DP files, they aren't locked, and I have R&W access.

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
I've gone through the System Preferences > Security settings, and they all look right.
I've done "Apply Settings" to the top level of the disk Get Info panel, plus the folder that contains all my DP projects.
I cannot change the "everyone" setting from either computer. It's stuck on "No access." Perhaps this setting is only allowed by the NAS controller?
I've gone into my NAS control panel and made all access read & write for all users.
Since my last post, I launched DP on the other MacPro on my network, and am getting a similar error message there, but with a major difference:
OS error:
There is no such volume (-35)
I can save other app docs in the same folder as my DP projects, and save them again under the same name. I tried with Adobe, MS, Apple and other developer apps. This issue is only occurring with DP. None of my Adobe projects which are on the same NAS are doing this. This seems to suggest it's not a permissions issue.
But, the DP errors seem to point to either a permissions issue or DP.

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
Have you tried deleting and recreating the shares on the NAS (with different names)? Any special characters that don't translate well to either platform in share names or files? Excessive path/name length? Just a few guesses.

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
I'll have to research how to do that. This NAS stuff is new to me. No special characters. No long file names. Thanks for the suggestion.CharlzS wrote:Have you tried deleting and recreating the shares on the NAS (with different names)? As I wrote, I've got the most permissive, some may say foolishly so permissions on the NAS. Everything on the whole share is R&W for everybody.
I'm now getting other disk errors when trying but failing to open older projects, whether from the NAS or direct attached RAID:
Resource file was not found (-193)
I keep returning to the fact that I can Save As one time, but can't save over the new file I just created.
I reinstalled DP and Catalina. Neither helped. I'm snake bit.

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
Bad drive(s)?
Also, Catalina with DP9.52? Is that combination "blessed" by MOTU?

Re: Unexpected error: (-1401)
AHA! I think I'm closing in on the issue. I opened a project from a directly attached RAID, not the NAS, over my ethernet network. I'm getting the same errors. What this tells me is that it's not my NAS that's causing the issue, the issue is because of a networked drive, AKA shared drive over a network.
Due to the fact I can save other app documents to shared drives of all types but not DP files implicates DP as having a bug related to saving over a network.
So, now I'm wondering if anybody else works with DP on networked drives, and if they are free from errors when saving over your network.
HCMarkus: I get the same errors with DP 952 on my High Sierra computer. DP 952 is otherwise working well for me on Catalina. My only Catalina negative so far (DP-wise) has been that some of my plug-ins (from smaller developers) are 32-bit, and won't work.
