Save While Play Plea

Post by dt1000u »

Dear MOTU,

Pleeeeeeease fix the Save While Play feature in DP9.51! I cannot get out of the habit of doing it, nor should I if I have important saves to make. My clients don't understand and they think there is something wrong with the pgm, which there is!

Are you talking about auto-save or the ability to hit SAVE commands while playing? I don't use auto save (disabled). Can you be more specific about the problem?

I save during playback with (usually) no interruption of playback, but understand the clicks/noises that (at least occasionally) occur can be disconcerting, especially to clients. Others have noted this issue; I believe MOTU has been apprised and is working on a fix, but suggest a report to MOTU (create a Techlink at MOTU.com) will inform the company of the urgency of your situation

I'm not getting any adverse issues saving while playing and recording. Maybe it's machine specific?

I too, get those annoyances. But only intermittently. It can occur with an all-MIDI file, MIDI with audio, or audio only. Sometimes I won't hear one for days on end. The file size doesn't seem to be a factor. 9.51 appears to have mitigated the issue somewhat, but it's not completely solved.

I work fast and I like the ability to hit command S while the track is recording, like I've done for years. There is an audible stutter with distorted audio before it completes the save and my artists hear that every time. This was a non-issue before 9.51 and MOTU tech support is well aware of this problem. Thanks for the command S tip while idle, but that doesn't apply to my workflow pace.

While it is always a good time to save, IMO, I totally get what you're saying there. Again, it is not happening here, but my rig is modest compared to a recording studio environment. Any number of things might be impacting the process. A USB or wireless bottleneck, perhaps? Are you on a wired or wireless QWERTY kbd? Do you get the same results if you SAVE with the cursor from the SAVE menu?

I would expect that a project with a lot of audio being accessed from the same drive you're saving to is going to freak out a little if you request a SAVE at the same time that DP is demanding audio for p[layback. That's more an issue with the HD (SD drives might be better, but the bottleneck might also be internal bussing somewhere, or even a plugin setting that's being saved with the project interfering with access to the playback request for samples.

If the project and the audio audio are on the same drive, I'd try moving the project )temporarily, of course) to a location on a different drive and see if the hiccup still happens. I would expect it would not happen if the drive access was the issue.

Interestingly, when I save with the cursor, there's no stutter. When I save from my wired kybd, it stutters. What could that be?

My guess is a bottleneck in the USB data flow (assuming it's a USB kbd) especially if the project is on an external drive. At least we've narrowed it down to the kbd v. mouse. It might also be the kbd driver. Logitech has always been problematic on my systems.

Thanks for identifying that. I'm gonna try to plug the kybd directly into the computer port rather than a USB hub.
