DP9.5 pauses during Bounce To Disk

Post by Gabe S. »

Anyone else seeing the BTD function pause during the bounce?

It happens sporadically to me on my system. I initiate a BTD, it starts, and then at some random point in the bounce, it just halts......and sits there.......and then, all on it's own, it continues and keeps going until it's done. It always continues and finishes and the bounce is ok, but sometimes it sits there for 2-3 minutes before mysteriously continuing. When you're bouncing stems, it's just maddening.....I think I could record the stems out in realtime quicker sometimes......

I mentioned it to Matt at NAMM, and he said he had seen that behavior.

Anyone else seeing this regularly?

Happens randomly to me. No idea what's causing it. Wont happen for days, then a little cluster of pauses will occur.

Thanks for the feedback.

I’ve seen it in DP 8-9.5. It seems to only happen with Kontakt instruments that I have programmed myself. I have tried things like checking “Run open instances in real time,” unrecord-enabling the track, closing the Kontakt instrument window, rebooting. All seem to help, but it has been so long that I can’t remember specifics. It seems to be happening less for me nowadays. My theory is it has something to do with DP’s pregen and Kontakt. It is quite bizarre when it happens. 10 second phrase taking 5 minutes to bounce.

Yes, it is QUITE frustrating when the bounce takes longer than a realtime recording. Ugh. Why the heck am I bouncing???

I'm seeing it in sessions where I'm just mixing and there is no Kontakt.

This just happened to me for the first time, and I have not changed any hardware recently. I also have no Kontakt (but do have Guitar Rig, but it wasn't instantiated.)

edit:
---this MIGHT have bearing on the issue, or not--- but although I'd done a restart and still experienced the problem, the time after that, I noticed a track had been selected - it was empty, and no MIDI was in the entire sequence; but it was a VI track...either Synclavier by Arturia, or Superior Drummer 2 by Toontrack. Or both. ---- probably nothing to do with it, but as Babz was mentioning Kontakt, I guess it's a possibility that VI's are related to the issue.

BTD... was any format conversion involved?

I have a 2.6 hour project (sequential stereo files using instances of Izotope RX 6A) and occasionally upload test mixes as mp3. Bouncing to .wav takes around 10–12 minutes. That same bounce to mp3 takes over 45 minutes. Converting the wav to mp3 takes less than 5 minutes in TwistedWave. I've not tried the conversion in DSP-Q yet.

Nope. The projects are 24bit/44k WAVs, and the format of the bounced file is the same.

The btd actually pauses/stops for a random period of time, usually a couple minutes. In some cases, I would have been better off just recording the master as a live recording instead of bouncing.

There was no format conversion in my case either, Mike.

So, what version of DP really? The differences between 9.51 and 9.52 are far greater than the version numbers indicate.

I would open the background Processing Window to see what is going on when it pauses.

I'm also having this problem. I'm in on DP10.01, OS10.14.6 (Mojave) All SSD drives. 64GB RAM, pretty fast system. It was also happening on DP9.

My session is on a dedicated SSD drive (in a Thunderbolt bay), bouncing to the same drive. It happens no matter if I'm staying in the exact same format, or converting on bounce (say from a stereo to a mono track). It seems to randomly pause, beachball, continue, pause again etc. It can take hours to bounce tracks. Soemething is up with this. Any idea if the issue's been resolved by MOTU?

Thanks.

Yeah - it doesn't happen often here...but never would be better than seldom, right? Or, at least, as an intermediate step, knowing what causes this.

Same here - DP 10.11 and Mojave 10.14.6, project in 24/96: bouncing to disk takes like 25 minutes for a 4 minute song!!!
Now, on my other machine (DP 10.11 but running High Sierrra 10.13.6 and 24/48 projects) there is no problem at all with bouncing to disk...
The problem will be most likely related to Mojave then isn't it?
Where can one report this at MOTU? Thanks!

I've complained about it in the past.

FWIW, in 10.11 on 10.15.2 on a 2019 Mac Pro doesn't pause mid-bounce. Buuuuuuuuut, if I have a Waves Dorrough plugin window open, it pauses for about 25 seconds at the end of EVERY bounce. If I close the Dorrough window or just delete the plugin when I bounce, it does not happen.

I've reported that too.

If you want to report a problem, call MOTU's tech support. They're very friendly. You can also submit support tickets at MOTU.com under the Support tab.
