Scrub/Cueing Bug DP 8 & 9 [workaround]

Post by stubbsonic »

I'm starting a new thread for this problem in DP where consecutive MIDI notes of the same pitch with quantized attacks & releases don't scrub or cue correctly.

I started a TechLink which is ongoing. Later, I'll post more details about that exchange.

Here is a new video that demonstrates the issue. There are a series of quarter notes. First, they are played back normally, then they are scrubbed, then they are cued with Slow Forward, then Fast Forward. I did four examples, Pianoteq, Kontakt, MOTU Bassline, and MOTU PolySynth.

If you are willing to test this on your DP 9 system, here's a simple project. You might have to sub in some different instruments if you don't have kontakt or pianoteq.

Also, if you are interested in this issue, and have access to another DAW, would you try a similar experiment in Apple's DAW? A series of notes of the same pitch, and quantize attacks & releases so one note ends right where the next note starts. Then test playback, scrubbing and cueing.

If you can test those, I'd really appreciate it. I can add it to my reports with support.

Notice how in some cases, the first note doesn't play either (which might point to some different issue).

Ok, I think I may have a workaround.

I had originally tried a CHANGE DURATION insert on each MIDI track-- but I was only trying smaller numbers of ticks like 1-5 ticks. I recently found that if I set the CHANGE DURATION insert to subtract 40 ticks, and scrub fairly slowly, it will do what I need.

I also found that this issue doesn't appear to affect external MIDI. So perhaps there is something different about what DP sends to internal VI's vs the external MIDI stream.

In my TechLink, MOTU support said:
"All DAWs work this way" (They don't. Even DP didn't work this way before.) and
"It's not a bug" (It is.) and
"It's a problem with the VIs" (Kontakt? Pianoteq? I suppose it's possible.)
"It doesn't happen with DP's bundled VIs." (It does, just intermittently.)

I guess I got off on the wrong foot with the support person. (Those dismissive remarks kind of chapped my hide.)
