Kontakt 5 update crashes DP8 - PROBLEM RETURNED

Post by stubbsonic »

I just ran NI's updater (I bought the Reaktor 6 upgrade for $50)-- and I decided to update Kontakt 5 while I was at it.

When I opened a DP project with an active Kontakt instrument, it opens the file briefly, but before it shows any of the Kontakt load status, it crashes.

I took Kontakt out of the Audio/Plugins/Components folder (i.e., I copied it to another location and deleted it there). And now the project opens, but I would like to get back to work.

I've repaired permissions. Nothing of significance happened there.

I guess I can try to delete AU prefs, but I'm wondering if this is a known problem.

If I restore the previous component with Time Machine am I asking for trouble?

You aren't running DP 8 in 32 bit mode, are you?

Nope. Running it in 64-bit mode.

I wish I knew how to read crash reports. Would it be helpful to post that here?

Only about the first 10–15 lines and those should already be sitting in a Tech Link.

I have Komplete and got the Reaktor 6 upgrade recently. No problem in DP 8 or 9.

When you ran the updates, did you do it through Native Access? NA has been known to be problematic till all available updates have been run. I had to keep running it over and over — it would update one library then stall till I quit and ran it again. Once everything updated, it behaved.

Native Access appeared to have successfully completed all of its installations and updates without issue. I hit the refresh button on top to confirm.

I'll go initiate a tech-link.

Re: Kontakt 5 update crashes DP8 - SOLVED

Post by stubbsonic »

Tech support assured me there weren't any issues with Kontakt (which was good to hear). The solution was to trash DP prefs and Audio System prefs.

The only down side is I have to go through all my preferences and reset them. While I COULD go back to time machine and at least restore DP prefs, my concern would be that there's some little problem that will bring me back to this point again. I'll just do it manually.

It can also happen that there are some old settings that, once purged, cannot come back since the old (fill in the blank) is no longer available to cause a problem.

Well, unfortunately, my previous issues with DP are recent enough that my prefs aren't that old, but your point is taken, and relevant to any others who might view this thread.

I do think that an old-fashioned hand-written checklist to restore my DP preference settings will help.

1. reload custom COMMANDS (Key bindings)
2. restore default templates-- (and save those)
3. etc. etc.

It could be that something about the project is damaged or has a conflict (from the older version?) that is causing the crash problem to return.

I can trash the prefs again, and I can load in safe mode and see if I can either load the sequences into a clean project, and then rebuild the Kontakt instrument from scratch. (Ugh.)

I don't have any other software that makes me trash preferences to get rid of crash behavior. But then, none of the other software that I use is this complex.

Still crashing with Kontakt 5. All projects that have Kontakt as VI crash on open. I'll get back with MOTU.

Native Access installed an update yesterday that really messed with Kontakt — it couldn't find most of my libraries. Trying to navigate to them resulted in invalid path errors. I really didn't feel like installing them all over again.

What worked for me was to quit NA, open the standalone version of Kontakt, have it navigate again to my libraries and then quit.

For good measure, I rebooted and then everything was back to normal.
