Stuck on MIDI keyboard setup

Post by ShortFuse »

Hi guys,

I'm running a fresh install of DP9.5 on a Macbook Pro with OSX Sierra.

I've created some instrument tracks with Play instances but the tracks are not responding to my keyboard playing. The MIDI keyboard is connected via usb cable and it is displayed in the MIDI monitor inside DP with all the squares filled in white/grey.

Please can someone tell me what I need to do to set it up properly?

Many Thanks

Have you discovered the "Bundles" window yet? Nothing will work without that configured first. Shift-U brings it up.

Hi yes thanks I did try to mess around with that but that didn't solve my problem - with Logic I just plug and play.

Well, with DP, you read the manual and go through the quick startup at the very least.

I tried googling and the manual first but got stuck hence why I'm posting here

As far as I can tell it should just work:

"Devices connected directly with USB, etc.
If you have a controller keyboard or other MIDI device that connects directly to the computer with USB, FireWire, or other standard computer peripheral connection, it will appear above the I/O grid in the same fashion as the MIDI interface shown in Figure 13-8 (as long as its drivers have been installed successfully). In this case, no additional I/O configuration is required and the device will be available as a MIDI input and/or output, as determined by its driver."

Please only helpful replies going forward...

MIDI controller is transmitting via USB?

On many occasions, folks have posted here with a "DP issue" that turned out to be a controller issue. Not saying this is the case in this instance of MIDIssues.

Sorry - I've got a short fuse today myself for some reason.

From the first image you provided, I'd suspect you have it connected to a virtual MIDI cable, and not to your MIDI device. Try the second one instead.

No problem Terry - happens to all of us.

Thanks guys, that has sent me in the right direction - DP seems to be picking up my keyboard:

I'm just not sure how to arm the tracks for playing. I thought I just had to click in the record column for the track I want to play out but that's not working. The play green arrow is on.

Here is what my tracks look like: https://ibb.co/ggDKow

Ahh figured it out - needed to create an instrument track with options not just a plain instrument track. :)

Thanks again for your help.

Ah - I should have thought of that. It threw me the first time as well.

Have a good time learning DP - it really is great - and don't figure other people around here are grouchy like I was today! Very helpful folks here.

Yes, you have just found one of the "shortcomings" of DP that is actually a strength. Although DP requires a separate VI Instrument Track, one can route multiple MIDI tracks and channels to a single VI instance. Have fun!
