DP 9.1 Hang on Splash Screen [Resolved]

Post by dix »

DP 9.12 won't launch on my new laptop. Nor will 9. Hangs on the splash screen. I trashed the installed version and reinstalled from the installer and restarted. No go. Holding Option on launch to bypass plugins still no go.

Any suggestions?

I've seen this many times before and it appears to be on the TriPan plugin. It's almost AMWAYS a 3rd party plugin that is the problem.

Start up holding down the OPT key and select SAFE or NONE and see if you can past that splash screen.

If so, you'll need to start troubleshooting your plugins. If not, let us know and perhaps there's another answer.

Nope. Holding Option doesn't help. Still hangs. It doesn't present the Plugin Safe/None option. I tried removing all plugins except MAS Support bundle. Still nothin. 7.24 will launch I think - at least it gets to point that is asks for the Keycode.

Thanks!

At this point I would just reinstall DP. Couldn't hurt anything. You might have to reauthorize if that's the corrupted thing...

Thanks for your help...I did that before posting actually. And restarted.

Is there an official way to deinstall DP these days? Alls I did was trash the app. is there something else to reinstalling?

In theory, deleting should do it, but it never deletes the plists. Are there separate plists and support folders in the user library that may not get touched. I would certainly manually search for <.com.motu> films, DP files, etc., in the Preferences libraries and delete ALL that stuff.

Another troubleshooting test for a corrupted user library is to create a new user on your machine, log in as that user, and try DP again. If it launches, then there is a conflict in the user library. If all things DP have been removed and reinstalled, and a new user account doesn't fix it, then it's a job for MOTU tech support, for sure.

On the extremes (things that have never been an issue for me) are bad RAM (very unlikely but always possible); a corrupted system (again, unlikely, but that has happened to me before, requiring a completely clean install of the entire OS (give yourself a day or two at least to do that one); and gremlins.

Sorry, that was a joke and some people don't like jokes with their MOTUNation fix. I get that, but I only joke about 5-10% of the time. By my reckoning, that means that out of my 23,720 posts, only about 1186 were really stupid remarks. The remaining 22,534 were probably somewhat useful, informative, or me asking a question about DP.

In light of that, I'm giving myself a pass and apologize for the rant BUT NOT FOR THE EFFING HUMOR.

Try the new user. My guess is that DP should launch fine. If not, you may have a more serious issue with your system files.

Good luck.

That ratio sounds about right. I find your posts 95% useful. I don't think my % is nearly that hight and I am nearly void of humor!

Creating a new account was a good idea, but again I get stuck on the splash screen. All com.motu files in my system have been removed to the best of my ability. Guess my next move is to call MOTU.

Thanks again MLC!

Yeah, I'm plumb out of ideas except for a clean system install, but I'd wait to hear from MOTU first. There is method I'm not sure of (Mike Halloran knows it) where you boot in single user mode or something like that, then reboot into regular mode. It is supposed to clean out your cache files. There are utilities such as ONYX that do that, but in my experience they didn't help revive misbehaving apps.

Well, this made me think I should try a Safe Boot. Which I did to no avail. Looks like old 7.24 has the same issue. I authorized it (via "Optical Drive") and can't get past the splash screen.

Did DP ever run on this machine? If so, do you have a TIme Machine backup? You can try restoring parts of your library prior to the hang.

I had Mac HD>Library>Preferences>Audio crashing DP sometime in the past.

There was a specific order Mike mentioned. Maybe you can search his posts to find it? Then again, he posts as much useless stuff as I do...

The call to MOTU produced this link to all the files one needs to delete to completely deinstall http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/uninstalldp

It didn't help me. I'm still stuck on the splash screen, but it's a good link to know about.

The tech did put me on to something else to try. He asked if I had any other DAWs installed. I don't really, but I have DSP-Quattro. I to hangs on the splash screen, but indicates that it's stuck on initializing MIDI. Makes me think it is a system issue. Not a DP problem. Sooo, any suggestions as to what to try next? Would Mike's operation help that? ...guess I'ma go look for Apple prefs to trash.

Success! Deleting the contents of the MIDI Drivers folder (Macintosh HD > Library > Audio) unclogged DP and all apps that use MIDI. I'm good to go! There were several old drivers in there that didn't like the new MBP and/or Sierra I guess.

Thanks again MLC! Your patience and wherewithal are exemplary.
