Stereo to mono

Hi Guys,

I'm using a plugin on a VO that only works in stereo, so I have to record in stereo but there's no reason I need the final file to be in stereo. Is there a way, when exporting, to turn a stereo file into a mono one?

Not sure about exporting, but you can convert it to mono via Bounce-To-Disk.
In the BTD window, you'll see an option where you choose Stereo or Mono. I would recommend selecting the mono option with 3.5 dB attenuation, otherwise it might clip.

There's a sneaky way to do this:
1. Create an Aux track assigned to stereo bus (say bus 1-2) output, with it's input set to your source, and place your stereo plug on an insert slot.
2. Create a mono bus 1 OR 2. You'll have to manually drag the marker square in the bundles setup.
3. Create a master fader assigned to bus 1-2 and set fold down to mono.
4. Create a mono audio track with input set to either bus 1 or bus 2 (whichever you chose in step 2). This will be the track you record arm and will be a mono mix of bus 1-2.

[edit] Alternatively, if you've already recorded a stereo track, you could use the stereo track in place of the Aux track.

I also use ProTools and they offer mono aux,s, VI,s etc. I wish DP made it easier. When I create a VI bass track or solo violin, or solo VI, I do not need them in stereo. When I record an acc bass, I put 2 mics on it, and want to blend them together with a mono aux not a stereo.

Simple solution to the double mic'd bass would be to record to two mono tracks linked. Easy to assign them both to a mono output. Or, just pan the stereo track center!

Open the stereo file in the Waveform Editor > Command-drag to select one side of the waveform > choose Create Soundbite From Selection from the mini-menu. The new mono soundbite will appear in the Soundbites window - and also be in the Audio folder. No need to Export.

I tried this yesterday but it didnt work I command-dragged one side only, just as you say, but it made a new stereo soundbite.

Any body know why?

Works here. I know if I’m not careful about the drop down selection I get undesirable results. I’d suspect that might be where the error is occurring.

Actually, I recently noticed that the Command modifier is just an option that makes selecting one side or the other easier. You can simply drag if you place the curser at the top of the side of the waveform you want a mono file from. ...and then choose Make Soundbite From Selection from the mini menu. As noted above somewhere, this does strip off the timestamp unfortunately.
