DP Prefs Lost After Running First Aid

Post by dix »

I was seeing weird fluctuating available-space readouts on my boot disk so I ran Disk First Aid. The fluctuating stopped, the next time I launched DP it had lost a lot of prefs. Themes, Export settings, Consolidated Window settings, User PlugIn Folders etc.

Any idea what happened here? Since Mavericks I've been seeing conflicting reports about the usefulness and/or issues with First Aid. Is running First Aid not recommended anymore?

Also, if this happened to you would you use Time Machine to retrieve the prefs? If so where would these be/where would I restore them to?

Thx

Is Disk First Aid the Apple utility or something else?

Right. The Apple utility that's part of Disk Utility.

Disk First Aid isn't very useful with SSDs. I have no idea how/if it caused the problem you described.

This looks like a directory error, something that TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior is supposed to be able to fix.

If you know where your preferences are, you should be able to go back into Time Machine and restore them. Pick a date and drill down. This takes time but works.
