Unknown Symbols in MIDI Editor

I haven't used MIDI Wait in a while, but when I started using it on my most recent project, these symbols appeared under the MIDI notes in the MIDI Editor. When I click on them, this drop menu appears with a string of symbols, numbers, and letters that mean nothing to me.

Does anyone know what these are and if they negatively affect my project?

Those are short Sysex (System Exclusive) messages being sent by a controller or hardware synth you are using, most likely. The meaning is usually in the back of the manual.

It also could be they are "Acknowledgement packets" returned from some MIDI control hardware or software you may be using.

" After a moment you should receive a 7-byte ACKnowledge packet (F0 7D 22 24 00 41 F7 or similar). ... Transmitted: F0 System Exclusive (hex) 7D Manufacturer ID." -- [from MIDIPATCHCHANGER manual...]

I've seen this more in recent months. I'm not sure if it's a DP 9 thing or if my keyboard controller is acting up. Or, come to think of it, perhaps I've enabled Sysex messages in the view filter!

Yep, hex codes for your Friday night SYSEX party. You can filter out SYSEX (if that hasn't been mentioned). Takes up a lot of space all in one little ticky... that can clog the data stream and cause all sorts of grief, especially if time code is involved.

Just a note - some keyboard controllers (including all "workstations" like the Yamaha Motif,
Korg Kronos, etc.) can not only send sysex continuously, but also MIDI clock. You can tell if they
are simply by record enabling a MIDI track and engaging record...if you see something being recorded without you actually touching the keyboard, that is the clue.

There should be system preferences in your controller that can be set to turn off sysex and
MIDI clock transmission.
