9.02 not happy with surround bussing?

Post by dix »

Stereo bussed Projects seem fine so far in 9.02, but I have a rather big 5.1 Project file that plays fine in DP 9.01, but in 9.02 it makes my 2408mk3 crash: big thump and then no sound until I restart DP or toggle the hardware driver. I have both DP versions installed. Also, it seems to be re-processing certain audio files over and over endlessly. By disabling a lot of the complicated bussing, in this particular file, I can get the Chunk to play, but the endless audio-file processing continues. I tried Loading the Chunk to a new Project, but the problems didn't stop. ...again all plays fine in 9.01.

Anyone else tried 9.02 with a largish surround bussing Project?

Thx!

Yeah, I did.

I'm starting to think the issue may be isolated to one weird project that has particularly convoluted bussing. Other surround projects seem okay.

I am still curious how other people working with large 5.1 or 7.1 projects are getting along with 9.02 - I'm pretty new to working with surround.

I haven't done much of that (beginning now actually). I can see for example that while Pro Tools needs extra plugins (typically M360 from waves) to bass manage its sessions for example, we get all those free, included with DP. Kind of cool :-) I wonder if other DAWs have that on offer.

Oh, interesting. I wondered why anyone would buy that Waves suite. I didn't realize that those tools weren't included with PT! ...not surprised though.

I'm actually looking for a resource that tutorials re surround mixing in DP, if you happen to know of any. There's some basic ideas I'm having trouble wrapping my head around.

You will find a bunch of good films and books on mixing surround in general. Lynda.com has some interesting videos you can buy. If you speak French there is a great book called Le Son Multicanal by a great guru of surround at the French INA, Bergame Periaux. I know him and have a lot of spect for his great knowledge and his is the greatest source of info on that. Other then that, if you need any particular info concerning specifically DP fire away. I will try to help, as will others :)

Cool. I'm clear enough on the general concepts of surround mixing. It's more about specifics working with DP that are challenging.

One question you may know the answer to, that I just posted on another thread (http://www.motunation.com/forum/viewtop ... =1&t=22412): how do I bounce to disk the fold-down mix? No matter what I try the audio file is blank.

...and unfortunately, I just know this one language.

Thanks again!
