DP 7 no longer launches. error -8796

Post by NealF »

I've been using DP 7.2 in El Capitan. Suddenly, I'm getting...
Unexpected error - 8796

I've contacted tech support and all they say is DP 7 is not supported in El Capitan. I told them is WAS working. The answer I got back was exactly the same. No new info. Nuttin'!

Do any of you have another possible reason for this sudden error message?

Thanks.

This might help but if it ain't supported it ain't supported. You might try a reinstall of DP to get the font(s) back (assuming that is the actual problem) but the installer might not work in El Cap, either.

I heard back again from tech support.

7.2 definitely won't work. It's been a while since I updated. I'm a bit concerned about all my plugins having to be updated. I know there's a way to run in 32 bit mode if there's a problem.

Is the only advantage to 64 bit mode that you can use more ram? I can't put more than 16gb in my Mac Pro - 2009 anyway.

No version of DP before 7.24 will authorize in OS X after 10.6.8. DP 5.13, 6.03 and 7.01–23 will work but only if installed on OS 10.6.8 and the OS was updated.

Does that make sense? Good.

Go to this link and follow my instructions. This should get you back in shape.

You may have to repair permissions

The quickest and easiest way in El Cápitan: copy the following command and paste into Terminal, then hit <Return>:

sudo /usr/libexec/repair_packages --repair --standard-pkgs --volume /

Enter your admin password when requested.
Previous terminal commands for Repair Permissions no longer work in El Cap.

Not the issue — you can't access more than 4G RAM in 32bit. Big difference.

32bit plugs that are Carbon based won't show up 64bit apps. If they support Cocoa, you're ok.

Lots and lots of threads on this.

DP 7.24 works fine in El Capitan, even if it's not supported. The QuickScribe X font doesn't install properly.

Unexpected error - 8796
I got this exact error in DP 7.24 last night — first time ever.

I had 7.24 up earlier to see how it handled Melodyne 4 and if I could easily get rid of the QuickScribeX error (I did — see the earlier link), then I closed it. I later opened, then closed Dragon Dictate 5.04 for Mac. I wanted to check something quickly and got the -8796 when I tried re-opening 7.24. It did not affect DP 8.07 nor 9.01.

After checking permissions and finding none that needed repair, I rebooted my iMac and DP 7 fired right back up as it did again just now.

Clearly the issue for me is DD5. The workaround, in this case, is to know the issue.

I find it convenient to keep DP 7.24 on my iMac. Lots of old 32bit projects with plugins incompatible. No need for me to spend time converting to 64bit if there's no reason to do so.

Yeah. And I'm pretty sure 7.2 was working in El Capitan so I don't know exactly what changed.
But I went and bought 9.

Had to upgrade Ivory 1 to 2. So far most seem to be okay. Am still trying to get everything licensed again. For some reason my 2nd iLok isn't seen by the computer anymore.

Lots of going back and forth with tech supports. Such fun!

Oh yeah, I am working in the 32 bit mode. Didn't want to add to may problems yet. :)

You keep writing 7.2. Do you really mean 7.24? If not, run the updater.

BTW, if you have some legacy 32-bit plugs, I'd recommend 32 Lives which allows you to run 32-bit plugs while DP is running in 64-bit mode. I'm using it with several older plugs and it works well for most of them.

As am I. Even the old MDA freebies run in DP 9 64bit with 32Lives — not why I bought it but nice to see it works.
