Odd stereo pairs in bundle options

Post by Justin_K »

Hi there. I encountered a strange problem today that I've never seen before.

I create an AUX track.
I want to select an input from a virtual instrument.
I go to 'Create NEW Stereo Bundle' from the drop down menu on the input window
All my instrument outputs are listed... BUT

Instead of being listed in groups like 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, ... etc
they are grouped like 4-5, 6-7, 8-9.. all out of kilter!!

And oddly, the last grouping has 32-1... and the 1 is the first input of the next instrument on the list.

I've gone to the bundles window, and all looks ok there...

please help!!! I'm so confused.

thanks in advance

That's bizarre.

I always use busses for that purpose. I assign the output of the VI to a bus pair, and the input of the AUX to that same bus pair. But maybe you need to access more outs than 2?

I'd delete all bundles and redo them.

Yes it is bizarre!

The outputs of my VIs are set to 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. (from Vienna Ensemble Pro)

But when I try to select them to bring them they are grouped 2-3, 4-5 etc.

When you say "delete bundles" do you mean the instrument bundles?

I've tried this. The issue is when I go to choose a new stereo bundle from the drop down list, the only options are these odd stereo groupings.

In your bundles do you have a mono bundle on channel 1?

You can purposely create what you are seeing like this:

- open up the bundles window
- go to the busses tab
- delete whatever is there, and create a mono bus on bus 1
- select add multiple, and enter something like 8 to create 8 new stereo busses.

These will use bus 2-3, 4-5, etc.

Maybe you did something similar to this.

I can't seem to recreate it.

The odd thing is, USUALLY in DP, you only ever have the option of outputs 3-4 and above in VIs.

The fact that output 2 is the first in the chain, throws everything out of whack.

Why are my VIs suddenly making output 2 available to me... in the form of a stereo pair 2 and 3

hmmmm....

What is your audio interface? I just learned — in the past week, in fact — that there was a firmware problem in some version of CueMix or the audio interfaces; I don't remember which or exactly when. This caused stereo pairs to start with even numbers, instead of odd. I wish I could remember the details better, but I was hearing a brief description of a problem I used to have (but no longer have). I didn't exactly write down all the details.

I know someone who might know those details. I'll see if I can direct her to this thread. If you're not using a MOTU interface, then let me know now, because this problem was a firmware problem in a MOTU interface(s).

Thanks for your reply. Yes I am using a Motu Audio Express.

Oddly, the problem only occurs in this one project. I've managed to open another project, and the system seems normal.

I exported bundles from here, then cleared all bundles from the problem project and imported the 'good' bundles.

I tried clearing without importing, but it didn't seem to work. (I've never delved into this side of the software, so I don't really know what I'm doing.)

Anyway, the inputs now are numbered correctly... for now.

I recently tried upgrading the firmware because I saw it was available on the Motu site. When I hit 'go' the upgrade software said something like "you have no interface connected". Of course it was connected perfectly, but the upgrade just wouldn't run no matter how I tried.

Will try again in case this is the culprit.

thanks again everyone for your comments.

Wait... don't update the firmware until we find out if it's the update that CAUSES this problem. Babz knows about it. I've asked her to come here and see if she can shed some light on the situation.

AHHHHH!!!

Problem solved... (idiotic mistake that is surprisingly easy to miss!)

I mistakenly loaded a MONO instance of Kontakt in amongst all my VIs

It was still listing all it's outputs in pairs, so it LOOKED like a stereo instrument but just didn't list channel number 1

When I delete it, all is normal again!

One wrong mouse click caused this. I was using it for a bass sound, so didn't even hear that it was mono!

Thanks anyway everyone... file this problem/cause away for a rainy day!

Bayswater was on the right track, however the only indication that there is a mono instrument in the "Instruments Bundles Window" was the fact that the offending Kontakt instance started with channels 2-3... rather than 3-4.

Now I see that it only had the '1' missing whereas most instruments are missing 1-2 and begin with outputs 3-4
