sd2 files can't opened in DP8.07

Post by Serialzab »

Hi everybody

I've made a work with DP7 (2010)and I have saved it zipped in a cloud. To day I need to recover audios but DP 8 can't opened them . I've tried a lot of converter to make sd2 files to wav files like : barbabatch, soundblade, switch, soundconverter and so and so . No way : these files are not recognized like audio (they were recorded in 44,1 24 bits and they seemed to be Ok (about 50 megas a file)Does someone have a solution to this issue ?
Thank you

Elizabeth, you may have to call MOTU on this one, but I've done some checking, and DP 8.07 is indeed playing SD2 files. I opened an old recording file from 2001, all SD2, and all I had to do was hit PLAY, and it was playing. 38 Stereo tracks (that's 76 de-interleaved SD2 tracks, mind you, each loaded with files over the 11 minutes of the file I opened) played without a hitch.

I checked to see if I had converted those to .WAV or .AIFF files, but no, it is playing the original SD2 files as far as I can tell. My background processing prefs are set for "Play the old, unprocessed soundbites."

You might check your Background Processing prefs (Preferences, General, Background Processing) and see what your settings are. That might make a difference.

Frankly, I'm a little confused. I thought that DP8 and DP7 had to convert those SD2 files before they could play them. But they seem to be playing without conversion, because my Background Processing queue is empty, and the Soundbites window identifies the files as SD2, de-interleaved, and they are most definitely playing. Each one plays in the Soundbites window as I click through them, listening to whatever is there.

It's possible that you've lost the headers to the files somehow, even though you did the right thing by storing them zipped. Maybe they had been compromised before you zipped them.

Try poking around in preferences and see if that fixes anything. You ARE sure of your routing, right? I mean, if you open your Bundles Window, you do see the output tracks associated with currently selected audio interfaces, right? Main Out channels should be selected on a currently operating interface. If it's an old file, that would be my first place to look. All my files from 2001 were recorded on other interfaces besides the ones I currently own, so I do have to update those settings, usually.

If you get nowhere, maybe someone here can tell you how to update the headers back to SD2; I've forgotten, unfortunately. And if you get no joy from here, call MOTU!

You may not have permissions although that shouldn't be an issue if you zipped the files properly.

Do Get Info on your project folder. If your admin account is not listed, add it and grant Read and Write priveleges to all accounts. Click on Apply to enclosed items in the drop down menu.

Hi,

I wish I had a solution for you and I realize this won't help much but I can also import sd2 files. I have found that DP doesn't really 'like' sd2 files but they will open.

Good luck - I hope you find a solution.

I created a new project the other day for some old SD2 files. They dropped in without a problem.

I use QuickTime 7.6.6 to convert problem audio files (always .wav) that i get from other studios now and then. It strips the header and writes a new one, leaving the audio untouched. I use QT to convert the .wav to .aif or .sd2. If I need it to be .wav, then I convert back. The results always drop into DP without a problem. I use QT Pro; I don't know about the non-pro version.

Did this issue ever get resolved. I'm currently archiving and trying to access old DP3 projects into DP8
but the sound files which are obviously SD2 files are not recognized.
I had to put .dpdoc on the project file to be recognized to open it. I tried putting .sd2 after all the sound files but it didn't work. Any insight would be great. Did changing the Background Processing setting
work??

I'm currently using DP 8.07
Thanks

See my earlier post. SD2 isn't a problem. DP 9 has no issue with them—I can open my DP 2 and 3 files no problem now but I had to do the following first:

Do Get Info on the files. Does you admin account have read and write privileges? If not, add your Admin account and give all accounts Read and Write access.

Once the system lets you work the files, you can use iTunes or QuickTime 7.6.6 to strip and rebuild the header. I've not found it necessary, though.
