DP Crashes when I run VI's...Please help.

Post by Krakadon »

I hope someone in motunation forum land can help me. I'm having a crazy problem I can't figure out. I just did a clean install on my early 2011 MBP of everything, Mavericks (10.9.4), DP (8.07), MOTU audio drivers, all my plug-ins, etc. Now when I try to record an audio track in a project with a VI playing DP immediately crashes. Also when I hit solo on a track it usually crashes. I also installed 8.01 (which I keep to run all the time in 32-bit mode) and 8.06 (since I haven't had a chance to use 8.07 much yet)...same result in all versions. I've done everything I can think of, repaired disk permissions, trashed DP & MAS preferences and emptying the components folder and added the plug-ins back in small batches. Everything is fine with a big set of plug-ins but as soon as I add one VI, boom, DP starts crashing. I wasted a huge amount of time already on this problem and my studio is basically shut-down since I use VI's on every project (I always bounce them down to audio so technically I might be able to kluge out some tracks but it is basically unusable). Can any one help me fix this? Thanks.

It looks like you've covered every base during the clean install.

Just asking: Clean install of the same version of OSX or a previous version? All working well before the clean install?

Here's an excellent checklist:

Thanks. On the previous system I downloaded 10.9.4 from the app store then created an install USB drive then did clean install from there after erasing the primary hard drive (after creating a back-up of the old system drive obviously).

Update: I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times. No improvement. I've reinstalled 10.9.5 off of the combo update. No improvement. Checked on the copy of my old drive where the problem didn't exist and now it does exist so I can't use that either. Tested with Garageband and the problem isn't present.

Stop "uninstalling". There's no uninstaller for DP 8 so stop guessing as to what you think needs to be removed. I won't write a few pages on how that can screw you up-but it can. You install 8 over the old version.

Are you getting crash reports? If so, send them to MOTU as part of a TechLink. If there are no crash reports, open a Console window and see what is failing when you call VIs. Some process is likely trying to load--Console will show it. You can copy the lines of code into a Text file--they are time stamped--and attach those to the TechLink, too.

When I had a similar problem after the OS 10.9.1 update, Console showed that the DP's Mackie HUI plug was trying to load and failing. I had to reinstall DP three times and that fixed it. Another time, it turned out to be an old piece of code for a printer I hadn't used since OS 9. A third time, the Finale 2009 Help files were trying to load. All of these things showed up in the Console window.

Boot in Safe mode by holding the Shift key. Reboot. This fixes things more often than you might think. Reset the NVRAM (PRAM).

This is solvable. Few of us are having any problem.

Crazy idea, but do you have any USB audio devices connected? If so, try disconnecting (and switching off) all USB devices and any firewire drives and try restarting DP with everything disconnected. Does it work then?

If so, try reconnecting everything one by one.

The Scientific Method, recommended with hardware AND plug-ins. Good call Mr. D.

OK here are all the new things I've tried:

* Reset permissions and rebooted (several times)
* Booted in safe mode and rebooted
* Reset SMC shift (left side)-control-option-power
* Reset PVRAM command-option-P-R
* Reinstalled 10.9.5 update from combo update
* Reinstalled 10.9.5 from scratch (made USB installer with 10.9.5 installer from app store)
* Uninstalled DP & removed preferences, then repaired permissions and rebooted
* Reinstalled DP (several times)
* Removed all AU plug-ins
* Uninstalled Focusrite VRM box
* Uninstalled Reason
* Removed all peripherals and retested (no improvement)
* Removed CueMixMakieSurfaces.bundle (showed up as a problem in console, moved it to a temp directory on another drive)
* Also I just checked my RAM with Rember just a couple of weeks ago...all good

I don't get crash logs because DP just hangs up. I used console and this is what it logged:

Do a GetInfo on that folder. Make certain that you have Read & Write permissions to the contents. If you are not listed as one of the owners, this is likely part of the problem.

Did these files originate on another computer? If so, how did you move them to your current Mac?

I can't make Library under my user ID visible in Finder even though I keep selecting that option. I can get there by using the "option-go" drop down command. I do have access and read/write permissions for this folder. There is a file there: Digital Performer_51FC7B0A-F745-57F8-86CC-90356CD11528.plist. When I open it in TextEdit this is what it says:
bplist00—]ForceQuitDate3AπœÒ“m÷"

These files were created on this machine. I didn't do anything to create them. They were created by the OS and/or DP.

The forum says this post has too few characters so I'm adding some more so it will be accepted. Weird.
