Installing DP5 on Lion VM - probably dumb question

Post by Zarathustra1991 »

This is probably a stupid question and more a Mac issue than DP one. We run the now rather aged DP5 at work (Comm. College), and I want to install it on a virtual VMWare Mac running Lion so that I can take stuff home to work on. (So it's a legit copy of the software - I have the original disk and serial.) When I try to install it, the installer begins, announces "authenticating installer," then throws up the installation screen with "introduction" highlighted, then it closes. End of story.

What do I need to do to get it to install? After that, I'm good!

Make sure that it is the universal binary version of DP 5. I can't remember exactly which version it is (5.1, maybe?), but the initial DP release of v.5 was PowerPC only, if I recall correctly.

You can't.

DP 5.13, 6.03, and 7.01-7.23 will run on Lion but they cannot be authorized on any OS later than 10.6.8.

You can install on 10.6 with Rosetta but you must authorize using your install CD. Then upgrade your OS to 10.7.x - 10.8.x and DP will work. If, however, you needed to reinstall, you'd have to go back to SL or earlier to authorize.

With DP 7, you can run the full installer of any version but, to authorize, you need to run the 7.24 updater first. Only then can you authorize using any 7.x CD.

I never tried them in Mavericks.

Same with DP 6. If you have Rosetta installed in OS 10.6.x, the original install CDs work for both 5 and 6 including Authorization but you have to update both for DP to actually run in SL. Only then can you update the OS.

Fun, eh?

I tested this extensively in OS 7 and 8. It took awhile for me to get many of my old files to open properly in 7.24 (they opened fine in 5.13, 6.03 and 7.01).

By Mavericks, I had everything working so I was no longer interested in further results and had removed DP 5 and 6 from my system. As you might imagine, running the uninstallers for 5 and 6 completely hosed 7 and 8. Doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of 7.24 and a reinstall of 8 fixed me right up.
