Cannot Import WAV Files

Post by brianherbert »

I am trying to import some guitar parts recorded elsewhere and saved as WAV files ( average size 52 mb). However, as soon as I try to drag or import them ( individually) into a track or a soundbite window, I get the error message " Digital performer has encountered an error MacOS error Disk is full (-34) " and the WAV file won't load.

My disk is not full ( 560 GB free). I can't see any posts on this - can anyone offer any help or advice in order to import them?

Thanks Brian

Seems to me I've seen this problem before, Brian, but I can't remember the cause of it. You might want to check the permissions for those files. You can change the permissions all at once if they're in the same folder.

Also check the Automatic Conversions and Audio Files preferences within DP.

Thanks Dan - Good idea - I have now checked all these and they all appear to be correctly set. I am always very careful to ensure the sample rates etc of any WAV file recorded elsewhere match my sequence and project ok so that any automatic conversion is minimised. ( This problem has not arisen before)
Still no joy in directly importing the WAV files - but if I copy them onto my desktop and then into DP, they drop in just fine ?! I had a similar problem dropping drum loops in from EZYDrummer in an earlier version of DP ( bug now fixed) I just remembered that solution to overcome - which was the same. Wierd - but at least I can make progress. I will keep trying - I suspect your idea that there is a compatability problem which lies within one of the preferences panels. I am not so hot on the teckie side as you have probably gathered !

Highlight one of the audio files and do a Get Info and see what its permissions are set to. Should be Read & Write for all users. If not, go to the enclosing folder and change its permissions and then click on the little gear-like looking thing at the bottom of the Get Info box and apply to all enclosed items (or however they word it).

If that's not it:

Are you dragging them in from a Mac OS Extended formatted drive?

Click on the drive icon and do a Get Info and see how it's formatted. I don't know for sure, but maybe they won't work coming from a Fat formatted drive.

Yes - tried that - all file permissions are good. I am trying to drag directly from a USB memory stick - which might be the problem.

Brian,

Get Info on it or select it in Disk Utilities and see how it's formatted. My guess is it's FAT32 or NTFS formatted. If you're using it between Macs and PCs, leave it as is, but if you're only using it with Macs, transfer its contents to another disk and reformat it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so you won't have this problem anymore.

Thanks Dan

You're right - it's a Fat 32 format. Although I have no idea - I think you are suggesting it's a formatting issue between the two machines? I am moving between PC and Mac, so I will leave as is and just go via the desktop as it is not a problem. I've learnt something new ( again) Thanks for your help and patience.

I think, but I'm not sure, DP just won't recognize or work with files on FAT32 formatted drives. So it can't even convert/import them. It will be interesting to see if this will change with DP8, being that it's cross-platform.

Take it easy.

I have had a similar problem and my solution was to copy the audio files to the desktop, then drag them into the lower left hand side of the tracks window. Hope this helps

If you have quicktime pro, open them in that and export them as wave files. They should then open in DP. Not sure how QT X handles this. You can also use other programs such as audio finder.

Try copying to a local HD and reimporting.

I thought this was addressed in a recent update. Brian, what DP version are you using? I thought this was fixed.
