Using the Finger

Post by brolly »

Hi all.
I've just bought NI's the finger & have no idea how to get it to work.
Any help out there.
I have a stereo audio track of Marimbas & I've put Kore on the insert loaded with a 'finger' sound. I can twiddle the knobs & get limited response but the real art is in using the keyboard to 'play' the effects. However there is documentation for every platform except DP-Oh Joy!!

Hope you can help

I really HATE when that happens

Sorry I'm not helping you, but I don't know that app you mention.
Could you use the documentation they have for the other DAWs in a general sense with DP, or is it too particular for each?

If there are other related things you need to know about DP you couldn't be in a better place.

Hang on for more useful responses by other members :)

sorry man, but I read this here...

http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/ ... ?page=1139

very bottom of the page it says...

"* THE FINGER runs in the free KORE PLAYER (free download on the NI website), and can also be used with KORE 2 or REAKTOR 5.
Please note: Only when used in REAKTOR 5 users have access to the REAKTOR user interface demonstrated in the product video. In KORE PLAYER and KORE 2, you have access to the most important sound settings mapped to the KORE Macro Controls."

I believe it must be opened in reaktor to function in that way.

I haven't tried The Finger yet, but I don't see why that should be assumed. The demo video shows Reaktor, but The Finger is designed for use in KORE 2 as well. After you've inserted Kore2 as a plugin I would think it would show up as a MIDI instrument. You'd need to then select it from a MIDI track and then play and record The Finger performance while that track is in record.

Anyone else tried The Finger? Does it work with DP 7.1x?

Actually this brings up a good question in general about DP7, does DP recognize and work with MIDI controllable FX plug ins? With the Finger you basically set it up as an audio input source, then set up a MIDI track to play the FX, the audio comes from the track that the Finger is in. I haven't read or seen anything about DP7 that addresses this? From what I can tell DP does not allow you to choose an audio track as a MIDI destination, hopefully some advanced users can chime in on this?
I'm at some point going to run into this problem with Guitar Rig.

On that Line, instantiating the finger in DP, does it show up as a MIDI destination source? If that's the case then you're golden, if not.

The random answers to OPs problems and the silence after my post makes me believe there's no way to do this in DP?? :(

Simplified: Is there a way in DP to control an FX plug in that accepts MIDI notes to "play" the FX, with your controller keyboard loaded on an Audio track?

There are quite a few plug ins that can do this, ones that I own:
Reactor 5, Vocator, MFM2, Absynth as an effect etc. I'm going to attempt to do this with the ones I own, but I see no documentation online or in the manual on this....

Yes it does. Finger works fine in DP7. These days you must instantiate the free Reaktor 5
(haven't tried Komplete 7 which also supports Finger) as an insert on the audio track. If using Reaktor it will show as Reaktor5fx. Then create a new MIDI track, selecting Reaktor. I used to use Finger with the Kore player but evidently Finger is not supported under Kore anymore. Under Kore I selected "effects" and then Finger came up as an option. Finger works completely as advertised under DP. You can select any effect under any key, play, and save your MIDI track. There is no need for DP to enable choosing an audio track as a MIDI destination. So the answer is yes, DP does recognize and work with MIDI controllable FX plug ins e.g. Finger, Autotune, and the like ....
Hope this helps! NI's documentation is not great ....

Cool! Thanks for clarifying. If I had bothered to load MFM2 into a slot and looked at the MIDI ports available in DP I could have solved this myself.

Playing feedback delays in MFM2 with the keyboard as I type.
