I used to think this too, but after having experimented a little with DP's UI (don't ask!) in terms of colour and "darkness", I quickly realised that it's more of an "eyestrain" to read light on dark than the other way around.
DP's new mixer looks so exquisitely clear and legible, I'm impressed and relieved MOTU went this way.
