Re: I Think I Found the Bottleneck

The VM on my MBP with 16G RAM is over 300G. On my iMac with 16G RAM it's 275G. On my old MacBook, with 1G RAM its 175G. On my ancient MINI, 1G RAM, VM is 132G. (The disk is 60G, so it more than virtual, it's imaginary). I don't think the VM size is the problem. Maybe you're getting a lot of page sw...

Re: I Think I Found the Bottleneck

If you are serving samples from SSDs or fast HDs, you may be able to set the buffer size for your VIs to "small". This means less data gets pre-loaded into RAM; only the very initial attack resides in RAM, and the balance of each voice is streamed from disc. This can reduce RAm requirment...

Re: I Think I Found the Bottleneck

I wasn't clear...my CPU certainly isn't idling at 55% That's the max percent CPU usage happening when playing back the biggest cues in DP. Ergo, I have TONS of head room in terms of available CPU power even when I'm hearing clicks and pops at 256 buffer. I believe the cause is the overuse of virtual...

I Think I Found the Bottleneck

Hey gang...I thought the reason I couldn't lower my buffer below 512 was the processor speed but after using "top" command in Terminal I saw I was idling around 55% even on the heaviest sequences. After a few weeks of digging I think I got it... Virtual Memory. I'm currently running about ...

Re: New Mac Pro Coming-Looks Like Star Wars!!! Wow

Internal storage connections and PCI slots don't add a huge amount to the cost of building a computer, so on that aspect, I don't agree that removing them would lead to much of a price drop. And as many have pointed out, Apple drops old technologies all the time, and doesn't drop the price as some ...

Re: problem with bouncing quality

Ok I will try to explain as good as I can I recorded a video with movie live maker at a laptop using cyber camera (built in in HP pavilion laptop) I converted the wlmv to wmv and then to mov file so that I can import in in DP 7. There was a constant annoying background noise (I think from air condi...

Re: New Mac Pro Coming-Looks Like Star Wars!!! Wow

If DP Windows becomes as solid as the Mac version, and there continues to be a lackluster economy, we might see migration away from the Mac. I love the Mac OS as much as the next guy, but if I can put together a system that runs DP and is as fast or faster than the Mac for less $$$, well... necessi...

Re: New Mac Pro Coming-Looks Like Star Wars!!! Wow

All depends on the initial cost of the Mac Pro. If it's not HIGHLY competitive with similar PC's and priced LOWER than comparable new macs of the past I really don't see the point of the exercise. The point of the exercise it to make money for Apple shareholders. Apple does this with premium produc...

Re: New Mac Pro Coming-Looks Like Star Wars!!! Wow

Modular design will be the future of computing. Wait and see. My worry is the modules are going to be priced too high for me to put a system together. Know what I mean, Jelly Bean? All depends on the initial cost of the Mac Pro. If it's not HIGHLY competitive with similar PC's and priced LOWER than...

Re: New Mac Pro Coming-Looks Like Star Wars!!! Wow

I'm leaning towards going with a 12 core current model and buy time until all the issues are sorted out. I'm simply loving my 6 core with DP64 bit; have run some pretty VI-instensive projects and have yet to hit the wall, even with buffer at 128. So, yeah, I don't think I'll be Jonesing too hard fo...

Re: pci expansion - are we really looking at $350 per card to host otb? That's not gonna fly here. Good question. A Magma box for 3 cards currently runs around $950, but I don't know if there are cheaper options as I've not had time to research it fully. This one PCIe card box from OWC weighs in at...

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

The new Mac Pro has a PCIe drive, but I don't think that SATA speed was the only driver here. I think that existing SSDs don't hit the maximum SATA 3.0 speed of 600 Mbyte / second. By rolling their own PCIe flash drive, they were able to hit impressive speeds of 1250MByte / second. It's not soldere...

Software for Monitoring Hard Drive Performance?

Hey gang...anyone know of some great software to see how my hard drives are performing in real time (MB/s data reading)?

Many thanks!

Re: Anyone using Thunderbolt PCIe expansion?

Actually, PCIe 2 is WAAAAAY faster than even TB2 at the moment. I myself was wondering and looked into it. Try 20 Gigabits/s versus 252(!!!) Gigabits/s. If you go up to a 32 lane PCIe 3, you can hit that sort of speed, but most PCIe slots and cards are not that wide. In fact, I don't think there ev...

Re: Optimizing DP for fast response

i hear you about wanting to keep it all in one machine. i spent a LOT of money maxing out my mac pro (faster processor, RAM, SSDs, a 6G mini-SAS pcie card and mercury rack pro from OWC, etc.) in an effort to keep my setup to one computer. but i've realized that if you have a lot of instruments that...
