Re: Advantages of a Mac Pro

I'm also interested to see what Apple does with the mac pro. But just to clarify for the O.P.: it's not the Apple hardware that is responsible for the poor audio performance, it's OSX (core audio). If it's performance you're after, there's technically no use waiting for a new mac pro when Windows (V...

Re: Advantages of a Mac Pro

Point taken. OSX does have some nice built-in MIDI features, especially the built-in MIDI over LAN.

YMMV. I personally have not yet had problems. I do composition and MIDI mockups and I use VEP with a slave.

Re: Advantages of a Mac Pro

Thought I would give a different perspective. If you are halfway decent with systems configuration, or (if not) at least willing and able to learn a bit about it, go with building your own PC. PCs outperform macs in audio and MIDI--not just a little bit, they practically destroy macs. I don't know h...

Re: MIDI notes triggering too early?

Thanks Dave. (P.S. I am using a MOTU 2408 Mk3) I froze the track as audio, and it lined up pretty well visually with the MIDI note (audio was ~7 samples late). I pop edited the soundbite and scrubbed the frozen track, and it only confirmed that the first transient sound occurs before the playhead ar...

Re: MIDI notes triggering too early?

Damn. I just got logged out of MOTUNATION and lost my long message... :surrender: So to what value is my note on message being quantized to if not to ticks nor samples? Everything appears perfectly lined up on the grid in all time formats and all resolutions, but playback is early every time. Does t...

Re: MIDI notes triggering too early?

It's a weird thing because when I increase my sequence tempo to 300 bpm the amount of delay decreases to 10 samples (at 60 bpm there is 46 samples of delay). I did the calculations... At 3000 ticks per quarter note, and at a sample rate of 44100, and at a tempo of 60 bpm, there are 882 samples per q...

Wow. That was extremely helpful and well explained! Thank you, both!

Re: MIDI notes triggering too early?

You mean in the Time Display Prefs? I changed it to all sorts of values and I'm still getting the effect.

I am not sure how to calculate your second suggestion.

Thanks!

MIDI notes triggering too early?

When I zoom in very, very, very close, and I scrub my playhead across the Sequence Editor, I notice I am triggering MIDI notes before my playhead crosses the MIDI blob-- about 23 samples too early. I do not have any sort of MIDI time shift plugin on the track, nor do I have any special audio I/O tim...

Re: Working with Bite Volume

Thanks What I don't like about bite gain is that I can't easily see what changes I've made to each soundbite. First I must click on the region and then check out it's bite gain value in the edit selection pane. Currently, Bite Gain re-scales the waveform. Rather than redraw the waveform, I'd rather ...

Re: Freezing really the same as recording a pass?

Armageddon, Thank you for that. That was very interesting. I had never considered the existence of something like pre-gen. I need to research exactly what this means. When you say "bounce a track to disk without freezing", you mean keeping everything in MIDI and then using DPs bounce to di...

Re: Freezing really the same as recording a pass?

Tried this a bunch of times. I think the answer was, indeed, round robins. Samples without round robins passed the null test.

Working with Bite Volume

Any way to raise the overall level of the soundbite without first creating two points and then creating a curve between them? It would be great if I could grab the automation line in the middle and just bring it vertically upwards.

Re: DP/VEPRO - VSL confirms ADC doesn't work properly! :(

Yeah it works OK. Of course it precludes the use of larger projects with many FX. For me, the whole point of having a slave was so that I could stay in the MIDI world as long as possible. I don't fancy having to go back to freezing tracks one at a time... otherwise I'd do everything on one machine.

Re: Freezing really the same as recording a pass?

The problem I'm having with this test is that I'm trying to find some sample that isn't a synth that doesn't have a round robin. Will let you know!
