Re: Favorite or recommended synth VIs

Omnisphere. "Still the one," rarely lets me down in a session. +1 on this: Omnisphere is the most evolved and versatile VI out there. And if the 10,000 or so patches it comes with aren’t enough for you, there are **brilliant** 3rd party sound sets available from Plugin Guru (John “Skippy”...

Re: Mac Studio External Storage Options

And BTW: We've been talking about drives and enclosures, but what about cables ? Has anyone seen this? https://youtu.be/AD5aAd8Oy84?si=iCvI34AQHYrFi5VE (Apologies if it has been posted here, but I couldn’t find it, if it was.) Was pretty interesting to me. Since we're trying to get max speed out of ...

Mac Studio External Storage Options

This will still leave me one TB4 out to use as DisplayPort for my monitor, in case HDMI doesn't do what I need. DisplayPort… Worked great on my iMac Pro. With my Studio, my DP monitors would not sleep for more than 30 seconds at a time. Fortunately, my LG monitors also have HDMI ports and changing ...

Re: Mac Studio External Storage Options

So if you buy another, consider the ACSIS but what you have is great. If you run out of ports, a TB4 hub lets you connect up to five to any TB4 port on a Mac. Thanks again, Mike. Good to know. I have already ordered the ACASIS enclosure and a Samsung 990 2tB SSD which I'll use for sample playback a...

HCMarkus wrote: Mon Dec 18, 2023 3:09 pm I use two of those (2TB each) with my Mac Studio; each serves VI Samples very nicely. Would also work great for general storage or DP project files.
Thanks, HCM—great to know!

Re: Mac Studio External Storage Options

That's because it is USB4 but not Thunderbolt. TB3/4 is based on the USB 4 spec but is certified and licensed by Intel. The TB specs are tighter but that doesn't always mean better. Ahhh..... (lightbulb comes on)… now that makes sense. Thanks (as always), Mike. So… on a related topic (or, as a form...

Re: Mac Studio External Storage Options

This 4 Lane USB4 ACSIS m.2 enclosure is under a hundred bucks. Until TB5/USB4.2 gets here, 2800 over 4 Lanes is the fastest external that you can connect to a Mac or PC. I have an 8TB blade in it running cool to the touch. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BBZT42HC?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&...

Re: Mac Studio External Storage Options

FWIW: I am looking at this unit for external storage for my Mac Studio: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-ministack-stx I plan to get it with a 2tB SSD for sample and VI playback and a 2 tB HDD for convenient storage of my loop and SF/X libraries. You can configure these any way you like and they ...

Re: Dead Mac Pro

I believe you are going to be very pleased with your decision. Hope it goes exceedingly smoothly for you! Thanks! And—BTW—did you go HDMI or DisplayPort for your monitor? I tried HDMI with my new monitor on my Mac Pro and it looked like crap, so I went with DP. I’ll need to get my hands on a differ...

Re: Dead Mac Pro

I can imagine the complex emotions of making that kind of big money decision under duress. For me, it feels "cleaner" to upgrade without those pressures. And I'm sure you're aware there are no guarantees of smooth sailing-- but even if there are hiccups, you'll get there. Thanks, yes… I h...

Re: Dead Mac Pro

Just and FYI... I was up and running on a film score two days after receiving my M1 Mac Studio, moving all data and much of my VI sample library from my 5,1 Cheesegrater and reinstalling all apps and plugins from scratch. I closed the score on the 5,1, opened it on the Mac Studio, and was off to th...

Re: Dead Mac Pro

Maybe try pulling certain dimms out (try half and half) and pulling and re-seating the processor cards (if it has them). I had an upgraded 2010 that had little status lights on the MB, maybe yours has some and that would give you a clue. I'd stay away from Apple and find a repair place or refurbish...

Re: Dead Mac Pro

HCM…… Thanks for sharing your experience with migrating to Apple Silicon. I will think more about it. The minimum Mac Studio I would get would be about $3500 all-in (M2 Max, 64gB + 2tB, plus a keyboard). Not sure I wanna drop the extra $3k right now when the 6,1 serves my needs (as long as it starts...
