Yes its a disgrace that Apple let this bug through, and seem to have no urgency to fix it. I had to literally go back in Time Machine to just before I installed the update and reinstall the whole system..Time Machine can do it.

I had this problem for 18 months. Things I tried were - removing startup apps - booting up in safe mode - unplugging every peripheral and adding them back one by one - used built in audio instead of MOTU PCI - reset PSU (and changed power cable) - reset PRAM - tested every stick of RAM multiple time...
