. Thank you Tim and Airtime. I'll try your settings. I've read the pertinent info in the manual, but I didn't find it terribly illuminating. I just want the sound to be reduced in overall level, with no compression at all. I'll tweak more trying your suggestions to see if I can make it sound good. ...

yea, i use the compressor in the dynamics plug on the background track, with the control signal coming from the voice track. attack time about 6ms, release about .25 sec, threshold -23, ratio 1.3. this ducks the background about 6-8db and it's almost imperceptible in action. very effective.

every plugin introduces distortion. they all create a change on the input signal, which is the very definition of distortion (apart from a simple gain change).

ah, but what kind of distortion?

that's the question!

How long have you been having this problem? Did you make any changes in your system or prefs that may have provoked it? What's the nature of the loud noises? Digital screed? or just loud reverb? Altiverb has always worked for me in all the versions I've used. How about the standard routine of repair...

It came up as a .exe file for me too, but I downloaded it anyway. I just deleted the .exe part of the filename and it played fine in Quicktime. On a Mac. Nice tunes!

You should probably be going from your Eureka mic pre into one of the analog inputs on the back of the 828. You don't need to be going through another preamplifier, unless you find you like the sound, but it's not something I've tried. Maybe you're using the front panel inputs to the 828's mic pres ...
