Can't you tell by the track color? Seems last time I did a comp with the comp tool, the comp retained the original take's color, so when you "show takes" you can tell which one it came from.

I think the only reason to attempt to use the interface without Cue Mix is if you don't have a computer hooked up to it. Since you will have a laptop hooked up anyway, just use Cue Mix. It's way easier to control and you can have DP and Cue Mix open at the same time. Plus, you can save your settings...

I'd be more concerned about your speakers. My interfaces thump pretty loudly when turned off. I have my speakers on a seperate power strip so I can turn them on after the interfaces, and turn them off before I power down.
