Re: Pro Tools HD NATIVE

I don't think Avid really had a choice here. I have seen a fair number of studios around here that were long-time, hard core, Pro-Tools-only facilities over the last five years jump ship (usually to Logic) or simply limp along on very old, outdated systems due to a either a refusal or a financial in...

Re: What do you think of the Focusrite Saffire PRO 14?

I purchased a Saffire LE roughly three years ago as a cheap, portable interface to test the waters on remote recording (my first non-PCI-based system) and have found it to be reliable and surprisingly nice sounding. I would place it squarely between my good, old MOTU 1224s and my Mytek convertors in...

Re: New version of Melodyne RAWKS

That's sort of what I was getting at. The thing is, if Autotune or Melodyne are used well it shouldn't even have a "sound" where straight-up pitch adjust is concerned. It *can* be used for much more experimental morphing in the right hands and with the right imagination. To me, that feels...

Re: Which of these guitars is easier to record well

Wow, a string change mid-song. Well, I've certainly changed strings just before a session to achieve a particular tone: Elixers for dense pop mixes and John Pearse PBs for quiet or traditional acoustic styles. Mid-song . . . yeah, you're right . . . . not so much . . . although, if it's on ...

Re: Which of these guitars is easier to record well

Well, I'm going to be in minority here, but I would go with the Martin. My advice would be to try and find a D-18GE or just about any mahogany, Martin M (0000 size) series to compare first. The problem a lot of people have with Martin dreadnaughts is really a problem with rosewood. Although Mark Kno...

Re: I had to chuckle about this article on Windows 7

Maybe newer, less-expensive towers are coming some day? (A guy can dream, can't he?) :D This is my main gripe with Apple. I think they are a great company. I don't even mind paying a premium for the value that I believe their hardware represents. However, there is just no way I can spend $2,500 at ...

I also experiment with the various output settings, since some sound better even though they are not the "correct" setting - i.e. I actually prefer using the "Combo Power Amp" setting instead of the "Stack Power Amp" setting when I am going out to my VHT, even though t...

I moved here from Miami about ten years ago. There is a fair amount of work to be had but it can be all over the map. It actually helps to have a diverse background and be good at wearing a lot of hats. I've got a good friend who is the director of education for the SAE Institute here. I know they n...

I agree. NI got it right with the B4. Having said that I do a fair amount of work in a studio with a well maintained C3 and Leslie combo. Oh my! Just about the time I begin to forget how organic and thick a real Hammond sounds, the studio owner (an old school, prog rock guy) will play some UK tune o...

I'll just add my voice to the chorus suggesting an AT4050. It's always a safe choice and often ends up being the best as well. The SP C1 is kinda cool. It can sound great or terrible. Personally, I prefer ribbon mics for my voice, so I mean it's going to be tough to choose an all-rounder. But the AT...

Vintage Warmer is the first thing that popped into my mind as well. Of course, you say you tracked with some compression already so you might end up with other problems with VW. Maybe try bussing the track to a couple of channels and then mix in a touch of dirt with some of the nasty upper mids notc...

Well, I suppose I have an unfair advantage as I do these kind of gigs on a frequent basis with a couple of groups. So, as I just pulled last night's set list out of the pocket of my suit before it goes off to the dry cleaners, I will simply transcribe the contents of last night's two sets. (These ev...

Also, keep in mind that active monitors give you all the advantages of bi-amping without the expense of a true, bi-amped system using passive monitors (active crossover, two amps etc). This is also why specs for active monitors often spec better than their passive counterparts.

I think this stuff is brilliant personally. I had no idea this was from a cartoon. I just happened across the band because the guitarist is Mike Keneally and I'm a huge Keneally fan. And, if you like this, please check out Mike Keneally (BTW - he is the guitarist standing behind Brendan in the pictu...

Wow! Several sections of this are brilliant. I find it hard to classify as a song or even a piece as there is no unifying theme. However, there are some wonderful moments. Reminds me of a cross between "Forward March" by Pat Metheny and some of Dan Zanes cute hip hopish numbers with the tu...
