Re: Cuemix vs mixer in DP
Thank you Bayswater for the thoughtful response. Plus, you used one of my favorite words ("ostensible") 8) I used to have a 2408 years ago and IIRC I routed my rack of samplers into a Mackie 1604 VLZ mixer and then into the back of the 2408 and then back to the mixer on the way to the spea...

Cuemix vs mixing in DP
I'm looking to replace my ancient 828 FW mk3 interface before it retires itself unexpectedly (I think I have exhausted the world's supply of available adaptors/extenders etc. while keeping this thing alive), and as I have considered various interface options, the MOTU Ultralite mk5 appears to tick a...

Re: New Audio Interface for Monterrey?
Thank you for the responses, that was very helpful. Based on this info, I will go ahead and do my updates and see if it still works and if not, I'll switch to something more current. I barely use 90% of the functionality of that 828 and so much of what I bought it for was related to the way I used t...

New Audio Interface for Monterrey?
I'm about to do a major upgrade of my OS and various software and it has come to my attention that my ancient 828 mk.3 Firewire unit (replete with at least 3 adaptors to get it to work with my Mac Mini) can no longer be expected to work with the latest OS. My questions are as follows: 1) Is my under...

Re: Mac advice
As a follow-on to my original post (now that this thread has me leaning toward a beefed up mac-mini), would there be any disadvantage to getting an imac versus the mac-mini (other than paying for a big fancy screen that I likely don't need)? Also, would I see a big performance boost from an i9 imac ...

Re: Mac advice
Fortunately, were talking about audio and streaming. Above a certain point, speed is irreverent and streaming libraries on SATA III SSDs in $8–$20 docks are fine. There is no need for large housings with fans. Toaster style docks are fine. Your apps and working files should be on the boot drive. Pe...

Re: Mac advice
A couple of additional questions came to mind regarding storage. At the moment, I've got a dual-boot drive with Snow Leapord and El Capitan (I can't even remember now why I made it dual-boot - perhaps to have one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit? I know there was an important reason to do it at the tim...

Re: Mac advice
Thanks guys! You may have sold me on the mini. Hard to believe that I may replace my ageing beast with one of those tiny things, but such is tech progress.

Re: Mac advice
Thank you to both of you for the very thoughtful responses. Naturally, I now have some follow up questions, even more so since I am a Luddite. 1) Have you heard anything about fan noise issues from the mac minis? If so, are there any models that are supposed to be better/worse than others? 2) Is the...

Mac advice
I'm hoping that I can get some thoughts regarding my next computer. I am working with an early 2008 Mac Pro and although it is still perfectly functional, I can see the end is coming. For example, it can't run an OS newer than El Capitan, but I see that if I want to upgrade to Kontakt 6, I'll need a...

Error Messages, System Performance and RAM
Ok, the thread title seems to cover a little of everything, but they may all be related. After moving to an SSD boot drive and upgrading all my software and my OS, I continue to sometimes get the following when I load the EWQL Play engine: "Your system is low on free memory. It is recommended t...

Re: GPU (graphics card) and DP
I have a friend who recently upgraded his sample drive to an SSD and he told me it made a pretty major difference. I guess a lot of VIs stream samples, and so, according to him, he saw a noticeable improvement in this amount of VIs he could run. That was on my list of possible upgrades. So far I've...

Re: GPU (graphics card) and DP
I understand that the GTX660 would be fastest, but I also understand that I would lose my boot screen. I may not have much to add here, but sometimes the first reply will get the ball rolling a bit. Is the GTX660 not a Mac card? Is that why you'd lose the boot screen? I've had a couple of times whe...

GPU (graphics card) and DP
Hey all- as I am finalizing my attempt to milk my early 2008 Mac for another few years, one of the remaining upgrades I am considering is a new GPU. Right now, I have a stock ATI Radeon 2600XT in the machine. I also have a nVidia GeForce GT 120 sitting in a box in my closet. It was the stock base GP...

Re: bringing templates into DP8
Just want to thank everyone for the responses here. I was going to try to move the templates over to the new folder location, but I cannot find the template folders anywhere on my Snow Leopard drive where they have lived previously. I read through some old threads about the location of the templates...
