and no, cuemix fx is even less related to the 896. that is only for the 828mkIII which has the dsp onboard.

i have a stock 896 and i've used plenty of apogee. i'd go with the apogee all the way. i just keep the 896 so i can much about with my macbook pro, i don't do anything too serious with it.

it still ends up on most of my mixes fwiw.

i would be VERY interested in this. i use my outboard gear on every mix.

i haven't had that much trouble in DP, but i'm looking very forward to version 6. i'll finally be able to transition the two studio machines to 10.5 and have all my macs on the same os to help my sanity.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem, but there's no need to restrict yourself to MOTU's converters. I use a 2408mk3 with Benchmark and Lucid converters.
