Re: External Hard Drives on express card on Macbook Pro
The problem with partitions is that if the computer decides it needs to read in a new sample for playback while trying to record at the same time, it may cause a glitch. Unless you have massive RAM to hold all of the samples, separate drives are probably the better solution. However, I would recomme...

Re: Partitions Too Full - A 24h Nightmare
Oops! My bad! I was thinking about VM thrashing and the like, which sounded like what was happening to you. Yeah, the big transfer speed roll off is at about 10% of the drive capacity remaining when the read/write speeds take a 50% dive. Writing speeds slowly decline as the drive fills up to ...

Re: Need Advice On Writing For Full Orchestra
Alrighty then... can I add Carl Nielsen? You'll have to pry my Nielsen conducted by Leonard Bernstein out of my cold, dead, lifeless hands! There are so many composers out there whom I admire for their various orchestration techniques, I could pretty much go through my record collection and list th...

Whoa! I had forgotten about "Tintagel"! Love that piece and now I know who composed it. Thanks!
And now, back to the topic at hand....
Oh dear... I just discovered there is a "Complete Idiot's Guide to Arranging and Orchestration with CD (Audio)". There ya go!

Re: Need Advice On Writing For Full Orchestra
I would also suggest listening to those pieces that started out as piano works and then were later orchestrated. All I can think of is Debussy and Satie at the moment. Also, something like Barber's String Quartet #1 -> Adagio for Strings -> Agnus Dei, how he sets the same material in three different...

"Stiction" a.k.a. drop your drive on the table to fix it! Gotta love the old days!
I tend to agree. On or off is a matter of personal choice anymore. Convenience or save electricity...

Re: Possible Unisyn Replacement
The SoundDiver 3 Beta requires a USB XS Key, which I have from Logic 6, but the software has definite issues, such as all of the checksum methods are hardcoded and there is no way to change them. This is rather annoying when their Kawai K1 adaptation uses a 2s-compliment checksum and my K1 does not ...

Re: Partitions Too Full - A 24h Nightmare
It's not so much of a percentage anymore since drives are so freakin' huge now and the file systems are more than adequate to handle all the space. On your boot drive, your Virtual Memory file should already be quite large and not need anymore space, as long as the system has been up for a while. I ...

Re: POLL: Turn your Mac off or leave it on every night?
Hmm... I seem to be at odds here. I leave mine on. Your computer should go to sleep and only sip a watt or two. I like not having to wait for bootup. However, check all of your peripherals to see if they sleep or not. Some may not and you may be using extra power you do not need to. Now for the ques...

Re: Troubleshooting CD/DVD burner
Hahah! Yeah, a little canned air can save some drives. I used to recommend it all the time. Laser calibration is where the burner pokes at the media a bit in a special spot to make sure the laser is getting to the right temperature and, I believe, is indeed aiming correctly. A bit of dust in the dri...

Re: No installers will work
I am having a similar issue with my "fun" computer--the one that gets all of the non-music stuff installed on it. Installers I pull out of disk images (.dmgs) have the wrong owner and I cannot, even as admin, delete them from the Trash bin. Very annoying having to have to shell out to the ...

Thanks, XYZ, for the assist. I tried reading it online, but of course, all of the interesting bits had been cut out on both Amazon and Google. I will have to pick it up sometime soon, though, as it looks to have tons of other good information in there. I was finally able to piece it together ...

Re: Wind Controllers: WX7, WX11, WX5 by Yamaha
And I have one more to add: does sidewise pressure exert growl, as some have claimed? It's hard enough going up and down! There is no sideways that I am aware of. The mouthpiece recognizes air pressure and bend and sends just two parameters, but I think with adjustments, you can make growl rather t...

Frankly, it was probably bad power supplies. The drives are good, the power supplies not so much. But you didn't hear it from me.

Re: Wind Controllers: WX7, WX11, WX5 by Yamaha
I hope I can answer your questions. Vibrato: the mouthpiece sends pitch bend data to create vibrato. The pitch seems to go both up and down in equal amounts, in proportion to the amount of pressure you place on the mouthpiece. Unless you have Ahnold Schwarzeneggar lips, you will need to use teeth on...
