Re: dumb question about levels

You can download a reference tune from the Bob Katz website, which is basically a filtered pink noise signal, which you sit at -12dB on your DAW. You then adjust your monitors to read 83dB 'C'-weighted on a sound pressure level (SPL) meter. You might find 83dB a bit loud depending on your room. So y...

Re: Best internal SATA drive for Audio on Mac Pro

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I've gone for a couple of 1TB Hitachi Deathstars. Leaving my laptop is going to free up a bunch of external FW & USB drives that I can now use for external backup, time machine etc. I really find it hard to believe that the Apple Store charges 6x the price of ...

Best internal SATA drive for Audio on Mac Pro

I've just ordered a desktop Mac and not willing to pay Apple's exorbitant prices to fill up the hard drive bays. I'd love some opinions on the following few questions.... 1 ) Just wondering what the best brands/types of SATA hard drives for audio are. I've used Western Digital drives for years with ...

Thanks a lot Shooshie for the lightning fast response with the demos. I look forward to having a good listen to them over the next couple of days.

Re: VSL Dimension Brass or Wallander Instruments?

Firstly, I love the WIVI brass instruments. I mainly use the trumpet and french horn. Being able to swell from a ppp right through to a cracking fff on the same note is amazing, and something that sample-based libraries struggle to do (although they're getting better). Unfortunately I don't have VSL...

Re: to what format to export a bounced file

More importantly than BWAV or AIFF, to be compatible with CD audio, the file should be 44.1k 16bit. If not, iTunes will try and do the sample-rate conversion for you - and you don't want that.

Re: Batch Export Stems with V-Rack?

I usually bus the difference parts to separate Auxes. I then setup stereo tracks that matches these same buses. Rec-Arm everything and I get everything done in one pass. +1. I do this all the time and it works perfectly. In my experience any unwanted bleed always turns out to be user error (often r...

Re: Comps and Fades, DP 7.x

Just wondering... did the transition to real-time fades in DP7 fix that DP6 bug where merged soundbites would have little clicks/glitches if there was any pitch correction done?

Re: Varispeed audio in DP

You can get varispeed FX on individual tracks/soundbites using the 'spectral effects' function. It requires a little bit of maths though. ie. to double the speed and go an octave higher, you enter: pitch: +12 semitones formants: +12 semitones tempo: +100% an octave lower/ half speed is: -12, -12, -5...

Re: Why DP for orchestral scoring?

The ability (or lack of it) to orchestrate well is going to make much more difference than what DAW you use. In terms of writing for a real orchestra, I'm with MLC in that I prefer to go straight into a dedicated scoring program (Finale, Sibelius, both good). As others have said, DP is really good f...

Sorry, yeah I always have overdub mode on when I'm sequencing MIDI so I forgot to mention it.

Works for me. I think I usually have to set up the busses in the 'instruments' tab of the audio bundles though.

Re: CC message overwriting...

The other way is to set up a 'search' preset to select all the expression data in a selection. Then hit delete and re-record the expression for that bit.
