Update-- the process described above works great, but that FW/USB driver is no longer available. Use this one instead. It got my M1 iMac playing well with my Microbook II. Haven't tried my 8pre es in awhile. Will do that soon.

I received a response to my technote at MOTU. It's a bug when using DP8 with OS 10.13 or higher. The solution is upgrading to DP9 or above.

Exactly right. If I power down, I have to re-activate. OS on old iMac is maxed out at 10.11.6, and I suspect you're right that file format is at the heart of the matter. It's a Duh! moment. I had it connected thru optical B, rather than A, and didn't have B enabled in Pro Audio Control.

They are all routed to the 8pre-es's onboard mixer, In 9, In 10, etc.

Note-- The headphones on the 828mkII will work if they are assigned to an optical ouput. Unfortunately, that doesn't help my problem any.
