or set up the external wave editor as audiofinder.. then apple E spits audio to audiofinder and in audiofinder control L will mix it to mono. simply drag this back* (*shame that MOTU hasnt released the API to audiofinder else u'd have a key to spot it back to DP ( like protools and logic has :) )

for me the stems are a delivery requirement- if I have used a reverb to make the SFX sound big it is part of the SFX.. i use audiofinder- in my view stems are wet.. so when I supply stems - ie dialog music and SFX they are 'finished' u add the 3 together and u have your mix... ( music might be "undipped" tho dependin on spec sheet and usually for TV doco type stuff ) u have edited and balanced your dialog....

actually last version on DP 6 post humously released was totally fine ( it was released *after* DP 7 came out ) solved a few serious issues for me.
